SUMMARY
What a car this is! a 300BHP, All Wheel Drive Volvo V70R in pristine condition. It was built in Europe and shipped out to Japan as a new car, where it spent the first 14 years of its life; bearing in mind these cars are designed to withstand harsh Scandinavian winters, so with the gentle nature of the Japanese climate, a Volvo in Japan should in theory last eternally, and this car is living testament to that. Incidentally, for anyone who doesn’t know, the climate in Japan is ultra car friendly; warm, but not too warm, dry and not too sunny; if you’ve ever owned a car from a particularly sunny environment (e. g California), you’ll soon realise sunlight can do as much damage to a car, as our damp climate.
It was imported into the UK in June 2019 by a company who specialise in importing Volvos, and who only bring in the best examples (this car was a Top Grade Vehicle) It was sold in early 2020 to a gentleman from Bristol, who bought it just as lockdown began, so the car was hardily used initially. I bought it in August 2022, as I have a real soft spot for Volvo’s and these proper R series (not trendy R-Design) cars fascinate me; it may look like a regular, sensible V70, but that’s where the comparison ends; these are as “mad as a box of frogs” and are an out and out performance car, that will see off most cars on the road, but will still carry 5 people and all their luggage. I have a few customers that are or have been Police Road Traffic Officers, and all say without exception that the Volvos were the finest pursuit cars they had, one saying that their stability at three figure pursuits speeds , was incredible, they all say BMW’s were far too twitchy and tail happy. I have to say when I bought this car, I drove it 260 miles home from Bristol and I can see what they mean; it just feels so safe and comfortable at speed.
Now, the term rust free is too liberally banded around in the world of classic cars, and is seldom true; even the best cars will have a rusty suspension arm, spring or bolt somewhere. In the near twenty years I’ve been professionally involved with Classic Cars, this is one of those very few cars I’ve seen that is actually rust free, it really is quite incredible, even the suspension bolts are still silver; I think because the way lockdown fell, and when it was imported, it hasn’t encountered any road salt or particularly bad weather at all, so is in breathtakingly good condition. That’s in addition to the almost flawless bodywork.
In my experience, most JDM import cars tend not come with much history, but you’ll be glad to know this car is among the exception there too, it comes with a stamped up book along with service reports and there’s lots of service stickers on the end of the dashboard (see photos) Although they’re obviously in Japanese, its crystal clear the car has been cherished; it’s worth noting that in Japan, a European car like this is a highly prized possession, so it will have been maintained to a very high standard. Most recently it underwent a big service (inc Timing Belt) in June 2022 at 59K miles. Its been serviced twice since and and before the car leaves me, even though it technically doesn’t need it, I’ll do another. The wheels were recently professionally refurbished in the correct Volvo 932 Anthracite and fitted with a set of new Bridgestone Turanzas, as the original Falkens, which although had lots of tread, had started to perish and crack…with a vehicle of this nature you do not want to take any chances with tyres!
So, there you have it a low mileage, pristine practical supercar, and rare too. I think this is one of the best on offer, and like any performance derivative of a regular model, its sure to become a bona fida classic, in fact its well on its way already, as these are already becoming very sought after. Its also so much better than a typically higher mileage, and often scabby UK car. I’m sure if looked after, it will continue to appreciate. Just one last word here, but because this is such an incredibly well preserved example, so ideally test drives will only be conducted in good weather only as this car is too nice to spoil!
THE MTSV DIFFERENCE
Unlike some, I don’t just simply go out, buy any old car, give it a good clean, then advertise it for more than the purchase price, disregarding any issues the car may have in the hope the new buyer won’t notice…I just couldn’t do that. The cars I source are carefully selected and I work very hard so that when my cars leave me, I have the satisfaction of knowing they are as good as they possibly can be within the constraints I have. As such I have many repeat customers and new customers that have been recommended via word of mouth…the ultimate accolade for anyone in business. To read more, see my website.
