The lovely history of this model:
The Fiat 124 Spider was born in 1966 at the Turin Motor Show. It was designed by Pininfarina, the renowned Italian coachbuilder, giving it its elegant and sporty lines. Based on the Fiat 124 saloon, it shares part of its mechanicals but with a totally different style: a refined cabriolet, conceived to appeal to Europe and especially the American market.
Fiat entrusted the engine to Aurelio Lampredi (former Ferrari engineer).
It asserted itself as an Italian alternative to the English or German roadsters of the same era. The Spider retains a wonderful charm and remains the best‑selling Italian cabriolet in the USA.
Production ended in 1985 and Fiat officially withdrew, but Pininfarina continued production under its own name.
But in 2016 it’s the renaissance! to celebrate its 50th anniversary, Fiat resurrects the name of the Fiat 124 Spider! Production was stopped in 2020;
Cinematic anecdote
The 124 Spider, especially in its Spider 2000 version, appears in several American TV series such as Dallas, Magnum, or Charlie’s Angels. It has become a recurring detail in the set of US films and series from the 70s–80s.
But that’s not all.
Recently in House of Gucci, Lady Gaga (Patrizia Reggiani) drives a vintage Fiat 124 Spider in several scenes.
