Launched in 2010, the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG marked a defining moment for AMG as a standalone performance division. It was the first car developed entirely in-house by AMG and the spiritual successor to the legendary 300 SL, reintroducing the iconic gullwing door configuration to a modern audience.
At its heart sits the naturally aspirated 6. 2 litre M159 V8, a development of AMG’s celebrated M156 engine extensively reworked for the SLS. Producing 571 bhp and paired with a rear mounted seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, the SLS employed a front mid-engined layout with a transaxle configuration for optimal weight distribution. Performance remains hugely impressive, with 0-62 mph achieved in 3. 8 seconds and a limited top speed of 197 mph.
Beyond performance figures, the SLS AMG represents one of the last naturally aspirated, large capacity AMG engines before the marque transitioned to turbocharged powertrains. Its combination of mechanical theatre, long bonnet proportions and gullwing doors gives it a presence few modern cars can replicate.
It is worth noting that a significant number of SLS AMG examples currently in the UK were originally delivered new to South Africa before later being imported. As such, provenance and service history are critical considerations when assessing these cars.
Delivered new on the 9th of March 2011 via Maritime Motors of South Africa, this SLS AMG began life in its original market before being registered in the United Kingdom on the 1st of April 2016. Unlike many examples that have moved between markets with fragmented documentation, this car is supported by a clear and traceable history from first delivery through to the present day.
Finished in 434 AMG Le Mans Red, specified at a cost of £2, 995 when new, the car was ordered with single tone designo Exclusive leather in Black, AMG carbon fibre trim, 19 and 20 inch AMG forged 10 spoke wheels originally finished in matt black, an AMG Performance steering wheel in nappa leather and Alcantara, and a reversing camera. The forged wheels have since been refinished in gloss silver.
Servicing was undertaken early in the car’s life by Mercedes-Benz Maritime Motors in South Africa before continuing under authorised Mercedes-Benz care in the United Kingdom. Maintenance has been consistently recorded at main dealers including Brooklands, Nottingham, and West London.
In later ownership, the car benefited from a transmission control unit modification carried out by Mercedes-Benz to reflect the later SLS AMG GT calibration, sharpening the responsiveness of the dual clutch transmission. Apple CarPlay integration was also added at a cost of £1, 200.
Since its arrival in the United Kingdom, the car has passed through a small number of UK-based owners, including a sale in July 2023 via Tom Hartley Jnr.
Today, the car presents in excellent condition, showing just 18, 418 miles on the odometer. Carefully documented from first delivery to the present day within its comprehensive folio, the car is also accompanied by two keys, the book pack, the Mercedes-Benz medical kit, the tyre inflator kit, and fitted tools.
