A genuine barn find example of the rare Royal Enfield Model JL
A wonderfull pre-WW2 500cc, twin-port machine
The engine turns over with some compression
Royal Enfield’s ‘J Series’ of models were introduced in 1930. Powered by inclined sloper-style OHV engines of circa 500cc allied to either three-speed Sturmey Archer or four-speed gearboxes, they are handsome machines ‘made like a gun’. Single and twin-port designs are offered as are short and long stroke ones (the latter intended for sidecar usage). The first Royal Enfield Bullet is a Model J derivative and (1935 aside) the series remains a staple part of the manufacturer’s range throughout the 1930s. Although, later versions feature fully enclosed valve gear and tubular forks etc.
Barn stored for much of its life, this rare surviving Model JL appears to be substantially complete. Wonderfully evocative in its current state, the Royal Enfield is a seemingly perfect candidate for an ‘oily rag’ refurbishment which would preserve as much of its patina as possible. We are informed that the engine turns over and gears are selectable. Offered for sale with current V5C Registration Document.
