We have here a cosmetically tatty 1979 BMW R45, purchased earlier this summer as a project with the intention of tidying it up to use as general transportation. I was then offered a R100RS which I couldn't resist. I don't have space for two airheads so the R45 needs a new home!
It comes with over 11 months MOT (15/ 08/ 2014) and around 5 months tax (31/ 01/ 2014). It has two ignition keys (one of them the folding BMW type).
As mentioned above this was purchased as a project and the following is what I had intended to investigate if I kept it:
Both fork seals are misting a bit so will need replacement before too long.
The clutch is tired and a bit grabby. It does not slip but makes it hard work in heavy traffic (the pre-1981 airheads all have heavy clutches which compounds this issue). It also occasionally makes getting into first gear when stationary more difficult than I would personally like which can result in a less than graceful departure from the traffic lights with a bit of a clunk!
The paint work is tired and faded, frankly it could do with a respray.
It could do with a general service.
It smokes a little (but only a little) after being left on its side stand (not unusual for airheads).
Seat base has a bit of rust but is totally usable
All that said the bike has a lot going for it.
It is nicely original with matching frame and engine numbers.
The fuel tank is solid with no leaks.
The clocks and all the electrics work correctly.
The heads have been converted to run on unleaded fuel.
It has a nice recurring number registration plate LGN 777 V
Please remember that this bike is sold as a project due to general tattieness, the impending need for new fork seals and the issue with the clutch.
It can be ridden away but just bear in mind the above if planning to do so.
