Here we have for sale, my Beautiful 1933 Singer Nine, Four Door, Sunshine Saloon.
One of only a handful left in the world. (There being only 5 Saloon cars currently registered with the Singer Owner’s Club).
Do give me a ring if you wish to have more detailed information about this delightful car, or require further specific images to be emailed to you.
This vehicle retains it’s original and TRANSFERABLE registration number valued at £2, 500 and this will be sold along with the car. The car is taxed, insured, up and running, just as it has been for the majority of its long, long life.
She is ready for work as perhaps an occasional wedding car, film work or more probably, for that leisurely (40mph/ 45 mph) weekend jaunt. Journeys always take an extended period as passers by often want you to stop so they can take a look!
There is no urgent work required on this car – just continuing TLC and maintenance.
The Singer Nine 9 with its more powerful OHC engine superseded the old side valve Singer Junior, but of course shared many body and chassis similarities with other cars of that marque. Thus, spare parts really present very little problem. The S. O. C. hold many spares, or can identify where they can be obtained from. There is expertise within the club on all aspects or manufacture, repair, history and identification of parts. They have an active program of promoting Singer cars at shows and weekend runs.
The Nine model was introduced at the 1932 October Motor Show, ready for the 1933 year. This particular car was registered 2nd January 1933 and is thus probably one of the oldest original 1933 cars in existence.
Detail Condition report :
Chassis:- Separate from body. Steel. All good, all original, no rot or welding. Requires no work other than paint/ waxoyl.
Body Tub:- Aluminum from rear to Scuttle. Pretty well perfect in shape and condition. No rot and generally good Burgundy paint finish. No dents. Frame is Ash, and again, pretty well perfect condition. I’ve not found any rot yet! Fixed window glass at the rear and sides have recently been replaced.
Doors:- All four doors are aluminum over ash frames. I have replaced drop down glass in O/ S rear and check straps on both rear doors , so have had the opportunity to examine both sides – All rear frames and skins are excellent – very slightest “push crease” in n/ s rear skin, hardly visible. Front doors all good.
Scuttle and bonnet:- Steel construction over wood frame. All good, no dents, but paint (very original) bearing the scars of 80 years of motoring.
Sunshine roof and surround.:- Tub top section is again in aluminum, with a steel framed fabric slider over fixed fabric roof inserts. It all works. Fabric is original – evidence of very old repair to fixed roof fabric at N/ S rear corner from the outside of the car.
Interior Fabric:- The car is trimmed in Red throughout and this IS the original colour. All headlining fabric etc. is exceptionally good. Clean and undamaged. There are two original strap hangers – silk covered, and a net to hold the lady’s hat! Plus a pull down blind.
Carpet:- Again, Red is the original colour. Fully bound and original specification carpet is in exceptional condition.
Under floor:- Front section of floor-boarding has been replaced. (fits round gearbox and into both footwells). All else is original.
Door cards & Interior door trim:- Mix of leather and vinyl over ply. All original and fair to good / v. good condition.
Door trim:- Replaced. New in parts.
Seats:- All original. Rear, sprung and all good squab and back. Front N/ S Good back. Worn but serviceable sprung squab. Excellent frame and seat base. Front O/ S Good back. Worn (more than N/ S) but still serviceable squab, with one small leather patch . Excellent frame and seat base. Both front seats tip (hinge) forward and slide for adjustment on steel runners.
Windows:-All four drop down windows work correctly.
Door locks / handles:- Doors lock internally and N/ S has the original lock and key (and works).
Instruments:- All original - Refurbished (working) Smiths 8 day clock. Oil pressure, Ammeter and Jaeger Speedometer. All working correctly, as is the panel light illumination. No ignition key – simple rotary (original) turn switch. Lighting switch (side and head). Horn button on original Blumells steering wheel. Lighting dip switch (non- functioning). Trafficator switch (trafficators work). Foot Starter button.
Wiper:- Vacuum unit – rebuilt unit and with a new wiper blade fitted.
Windscreen: – Opening, hinged and all good / all fittings complete.
Fuel:- Car was built BEFORE the introduction of lead into petrol, therefore needs no conversion. I use a squirt of LRP to be on the safe side! Fuel is drawn from rear tank by a vacuum unit – all functions well!
Engine:- Fully Rebuilt engine of 972 cc Overhead Camshaft. Remetalled (white metal) bearing surfaces etc. – All good, runs like a sewing machine and very quiet. Engine oil just changed. Burns no oil to speak of and no leaks.
Electrics:- 6V Dynamo Refurbished, delivers about 5 amps at 30 mph through single coil regulator.
Starter:- Electric or Starting handle (supplied). All functions well.
Clutch / Gearbox. Clutch replaced some time ago, (rod operated) and less than 1, 000 miles covered. The 4 speed non-synchro box is smooth and changes fuss-free if a little slowly by modern standards! Gearbox checked at the time the engine was removed. Oil brought to level at service.
Cooling Radiator:- Re-cored – (As new condition). No water pump. Non-pressure system. Not a good idea to leave the car ticking over for long periods on a hot day, but otherwise fine – never boiled with me!
Final Drive:- New cush drive to rear of shaft – This is of rubber design – will last longer than fabric , but needs to settle as not as smooth a drive as previously – may change this back as have a fabric drive to replace with! Original Fabric cush drive fitted at gearbox end.
Rear Axle:- Rebuilt with new / replacement differential gear.
Shock absorbers / Springs:- 7 leaf cart spring with vertical telescopic shock absorber on the rear (new for the Nine & quite advanced). 6 leaf cart spring with hinged resistance calliper to the front. All good- springs have a nice set and are in excellent restored condition.
Brakes:- Rod operated – All good and in adjustment. Yes, she does stop, but one needs to anticipate! She sports a very nice chrome handbrake lever!
Lights:- All good and working, though there is no dip beam operation as originally, one light would have gone out and the other light frame swung down – This is now illegal. So, just two dip beams operate.
Battery:- Replacement 6V Heavy Duty which is near new (all good). The car is set up as a –ve earth system. Main battery cables and terminal clamps renewed to the chassis point and to main harness.
Grease points:- All greased up at service this month, as spec.
Wheels:- These were re-spoked and powder coated some years ago, they are in all good to excellent (non rusty) and original condition, They run true with no loose spokes! The original wheel brace and 1930's hydraulic jack is included in the sale.
Tyres:- 4 new tyres. Matching front pair and matching rear (drive) pair. Spare carried at rear and serviceable. The rear carrier drops down for luggage accommodation.
Chromework:- Radiator cowl is re-chromed, front fender is re-chromed. Both rear ¼ fenders are re-chromed and all sit on perfectly straight refurbished dumb irons. Outside door handles are the original items and somewhat pitted.
Now, The bad points:-
There is an advisory on king pins but not a fail! Both sides require new bushes sometime in the future, but not urgently. (I would guess in about 2, 000 to 3, 000 miles – for me that is 4 to 5 years time, So, I would get round to it this year, probably). Parts are available without difficulty, they are not expensive and it’s an easy job for a competent person, or someone with engineering skills. Again, your local branch of the S. O. C. can advise further.
The front and rear wings have taken a couple of knocks either end and they need a bit of TLC - they simply unbolt to work on them. – nothing really visible in the photo’s though.
There is a bit of Burgundy top coat needed on the bottom of the scuttle N/ S & O/ S where I have cleared some rust and have left in base coat.
(That’s it for the bad points).
