At just 19 years old, I gathered my savings together and collected ‘Buttercup’ from Ian’s business ‘The Nine Workshop’ in Pott Shrigley – I come from a family of Singer owners and enthusiasts; my grandfather having met my grandmother whilst parked in his 9 ‘Le Mans’ in a local pub car park in 1957!
Having removed a number of Ian’s cats that were sleeping under the tonneau cover, I set about preparing the car for some light competition work and had some great fun competing in handicap races with the VSCC, as well as trips to local pubs and shows.
Ian owned the car for in excess of 50 years, covering over a quarter of a million miles during this period. The car is widely regarded as one of the most successful vintage trial cars in existence and has competed at events and displays all over Europe, including Le Mans in 1978. Ian compiled a photograph album over the decades, depicting the car in action at all of these events – which remains with Buttercup’s history file to this day.
The car is mechanically very good and is ‘on the button’. It features many of Ian’s tweaks and modifications, as it was technically the development car for ‘The Nine Workshop’. The bodywork and interior however, bring a whole new meaning to the word ‘patina’ – Buttercup is rough and ready and can only really be described as ‘oily rag’ – she won’t win any concourse events, but you’ll certainly have lots of fun along the way.
With much regret, after the acquisition of my first house, ‘Buttercup’ is offered for sale for only the second time in nearly 60 years. A unique opportunity to acquire one of the most famous Singers in existence at an affordable price.
