This is one of the first Generation Cougars, which was Mercury’s first “pony” car. Mercury entered into the American Muscle market with this model which was based on Fords Mustang. Using the chassis and floor pan from the Mustang helped in its racing performance when it was raced in the 67/ 68 Trans am series with the Ford Teams support. Dan Gurney and Parnelli Jones were the super star drivers who battle out the series , coming second to the Ford Team by a mere two points! The Cougar was based on the 1967 refaced first generation Mustang some interesting design differences were; a full width divided front grille with hidden headlamps giving it a more menacing look, it also had a similar upgrade to the rear with the license plate surrounded on both sides by vertically slatted grille work concealing rear lights with sequential indicators. Which is really of its time!! We found this Cougar in Texas in a town called “El Paso”. I hope you agree it was worth the drive, we purchased it from the owner who had lovingly restored it to its present condition. The car has been painted in Wimbledon White (we were tempted to put some Le Mans racing stripes on!) which contrasts perfectly with the Palomino interior. New headlining, door cards, dash and carpets were also replaced. A period style digital radio and a central locking/ alarm is also fitted. The steering column has also been changed to a full chrome “tilt” option. The engine and the original manual transmission were overhauled, also a new Edelbrock four barrel carburettor and a Edelbrock performer intake were also installed. New Aluminium radiator , expansion tank, and Ford racing rocker covers were fitted.. A new disc brake conversion and rack and pinion power steering assembly were fitted making this a more comfortable driving experience. A twin flow master exhaust sits underneath with long tube headers , which burbles nicely! The wheels are chrome Cragar”s and have a recent set of tyres fitted. Structurally this vehicle is absolutely original and corrosion free. All parts are redly available for these cars through classic Ford parts dealers. This as with all our cars is here in the UK! will be registered and a V5 given to its new owner. So overall this car is ready to take to shows , classic rally’s or just fun days out!
