Presented in its desirable colour combination, our vehicle has an ultra-low mileage, and is presented in truly wonderful condition. This Porsche was the 6th incarnation of the famous 911 Turbo. Very few 996 Turbos were sold with manual gearboxes, and even fewer had a factory-fitted X50 power pack. One of the true modern sports classics, and very definitely a collectable with a bright future.
The fact that the 996 Turbo came with four-wheel drive and Porsche Stability Management as standard meant that it was also capable of delivering the most sophisticated, safest Porsche 911 driving experience yet.
The 996 Turbo had a 3, 600 cc engine, with twin turbochargers, and was water cooled, which brought power up to a staggering 420 BHP, making the production car capable of 0 to 60 mph in 4. 2 seconds. The 0 - 60 mph acceleration time dropped to 3. 6 seconds with the addition of the X50 package. The quarter mile was covered in an astonishing 11. 8 seconds. The 911 Turbo had the most powerful braking system ever fitted to a production car. The system, designed to withstand extreme punishment, featured four-piston monobloc aluminium fixed calliper brakes with 330 mm cross drilled internally vented discs, four channelABS and a 10" vacuum brake booster. Braking from 60 to 0 mph took just 2. 4 seconds!
The X50 power package option increased the BHP to a staggering 450, which prompted BBC TV’s Jeremy Clarkson to comment at the time, “It hurts me to say this, but of all the cars you can buy today, this is the best.” The maximum torque figure rose to a whopping 457 lb/ ft.
Compared with the previous 993 Turbo model, the 996 represented a virtual redesign. Cosmetically, it moved Porsche on in many significant yet subtle ways: the lines were smoothed out, the windscreen was raked back, the cabin was roomier and the facia finally looked like it had been styled. The structure managed the neat trick of being 45 per cent stiffer yet lighter than the older model. The chassis and brakes are a perfect match for the engine’s performance.
This low-mileage example of a rare manual 996 Turbo Coupe was supplied by Porsche Centre Park Lane in July 2004, and was maintained at Porsche Centre West London. It stayed cossetted in a private underground car park from new, and was clearly used very sparingly. It benefits from just having had a major service, new belts, fluid changes, and a new tyre set. It will also be supplied with a new 12-month MOT.
