On debut the Triumph TR5 PI was a game changer, the first British sports car fitted with Petrol Injection. The TR5 PI was and still is a seriously fast, eyes wide open and white knuckle inducing sports car.
Styled by Giovanni Michelotti, whom also penned the Spitfire and jaw dropping Maserati 3500GT among others, the TR5 PI equipped with a 2. 5 litre 6 cylinder engine produced 150hp, 45 more than the outgoing TR4 and was capable of reaching 201km/ h and famously despatched the 0-100km/ h sprint in just 8. 5 seconds.
Servo assisted disc brakes also featured as well as independent rear suspension, wide 4. 5 inch chrome wire wheels and for the driver the interior was fitted with a sporty padded dash, plush pile carpets, rib sticking contoured bucket seats and a full range of instrumentation.
Motor Magazine described the TR5’s engine as a “truly magnificent power unit” and because of its limited production with just 1, 160 cars ever built in RHD and even less surviving the ravages of time, today the TR5 PI is a very collectable and tractable sports classic.
Offered here is an extremely rare Australian delivered, matching numbers 1968 Triumph TR5 PI in its original colour combination of Signal Red over Black trim with flashes of walnut veneer.
The car is optioned with chrome wire wheels, overdrive, and the incredibly hard to find Surrey Top.
A credit to its last custodian and an asset to the next, this excellently prepared TR5 PI has just been released from a small private collection and was recently restored with excellent results.
A short drive highlights all the tell-tale signs of a well restored car from the sleek gear shift throw to the well weighted steering, torquey acceleration and throaty exhaust note. Totally engaging, this is one of the best driving TR5’s we’ve seen.
Beautifully finished, from the well-padded bucket seats with subtle diamond shaped cut-outs to the neatly fitted headliner, polished timber veneer dash trim and even the well weighted Triumph style switch gear the attention to detail paid to the interior trim is second to none.
Outside, the panel fit excellent including the notoriously difficult to get right bonnet lines and the paintwork carries a glass-like finish. The correct “Made In England” light lenses are all still fitted, so too is the expertly finished bright work all neatly finished off with the unique two tone Surrey Top and brand new chrome wire wheels.
Arguably the pinnacle of Triumph’s TR series, the combination of Michelotti’s classic styling, low production numbers and the raw performance of the TR5 PI make it one of the most desirable and totally engrossing classic cars to own, drive and invest in.
