1986 Mercedes-Benz 300SL
Remarkably, this 300SL has had just one owner from new. He ordered the car in 1985, it was built in April ’86 and collected from the factory in early May.
This is one of the first of the facelift R107s, featuring a raft of improvements including the new M103 engine, galvanised body and 15in wheels. The body is finished in Surf Blue with matching hard-top, dark blue soft-top and contrasted by a grey cloth interior.
Having collected the 300SL from the factory, the gentleman toured the Alps for three weeks to run the car in prior to returning to the factory for its first service. Since then the SL has remained a third/ fourth car, always garaged and spending many years at the owner’s house in the south of France.
Around ten years ago (at 21 years old/ 115k miles), the SL underwent a major refurbishment with a view to completely refreshing the car. To that end all moving suspension components were replaced including springs, dampers, bushes and joints. The brakes were replaced, the engine bearings were measured for wear (and found to be excellent), the cylinder head was stripped and all valves, guides and springs replaced. All fuel lines were renewed, the headlamp reflectors replaced and the hood replaced. The paintwork was refreshed and, before any work commenced, the bulkhead inspected and found to be perfect and original. The hood was also replaced.
The car’s mileage now stands at 130, 897 miles, having covered just 15, 000 miles since its renovation and always garaged.
The original bill of sale, books and documentation of the restoration come with the car.
Thanks to the care of just one keeper, this car presents in absolutely superb condition throughout. The paintwork is unmarked, the underside superb and the interior is entirely original and in lovely order. The hood is as new and the hard-top excellent.
There are very few one owner R107s left. It is immaculate and drives beautifully, leaving nothing for the new owner to do but use and enjoy the car
