The classic 911 look presented in the ever-desirable Dark Blue paint with Beige leather combination. Keeping the Porsche mantra of “Evolution, not revolution” alive, the 991 Series keeps a close visual link to its 997 predecessor but has moved the game forward a very long way.
Designed by stylist Grant Larson, with a longer and wider track, the 991 brings elegance back to the current 911 cars. The longer wheelbase improves stability and the wider track means that a slightly milder anti-roll bar can be employed at the front, thus reducing the tendency to understeer, an inherent 911 trait. As it stands, the revised front and rear running gear combined with the larger dimensions make the 991 a different handling Porsche than the 997, particularly in terms of stability.
Clever use of aluminium panels, (the skin is 45 % aluminium and magnesium), has enabled Porsche to reduce the weight of the Carrera from the 1, 455kg of the 997 to 1, 415kg for the equivalent 991 models, which is quite an achievement given that 58kg of additional ‘safety products’ had to be added to the new version.
Also noticeable is the raised centre console housing the gearshift, a development first seen on the Carrera GT and more recently extended to the Cayenne and the Panamera. The handbrake lever has also disappeared, replaced by an electric parking brake. The combination of more space and richer materials has elevated the 911’s cockpit to a distinctly ‘grand touring’ environment rather than that of a mere top-flight sports car.
Quoted performance figures give a top speed of 188 mph, and a 0 - 62 mph acceleration time of 4. 1 secs.
