A superb example of the legendary 190E 2. 5-16, equipped with the all-important manual gearbox and having been in the same ownership for the past 19 years.
Introduced in 1983, initially as the 2. 3-16, the performance model of the 190/ 190E range was designed in conjunction with Cosworth to take Mercedes into the DTM touring car championship. And in 1988 the engine capacity was increased to 2. 5-litres offering more power and torque.
This 2. 5-16 was sold new in September 1990 by Stirling of Worcester to a Mr Houghton who kept the car for six years before being sold to Stuart Graham, a Honda dealer principle who had the car for his wife’s use until 1999. The current owner of the last 19 years saw the car advertised in The Sunday Times whilst he was on route to Scotland on holiday. Having already owned four of these great cars since 1985, he decided he fancied another, so he diverted to showroom in Stone and bought the car and kept it as part of his collection until now.
Finished it Astral silver with black leather interior and manual transmission. In addition it has a power driver’s seat, OTG, headlamp wash/ wipe and illuminated vanity mirrors.
The total mileage stands at 115k miles. In 2000 Mercedes main dealer Rivervale of Reading fitted a new speedo head (due to the original failing) so 63k is showing on the car but the original speedo head is included with the car and the change fully documented in the service history.
This car has an incredible history file. Not only does it have all its books and manuals and stamped service book, but it has a folder with every bill invoice since new and every MoT since 1995. A log of every service, fuel fill up and repair covers the last 20 years. There is also a copy of every V5 since new and copies of all correspondence relating to the car, plus various articles on the 190E ‘Cosworth’ and original sales brochures. The service history is entirely with Mercedes main dealers and one well regarded specialist.
The car is in excellent and very original condition inside and out. It wears recent matching Dunlop tyres and drives very well indeed.
So many of these hot 190s were thrashed and abused during their middle years, now these are regarded as bona fide classics it’s rare and delightful to come across a cossetted car that’s been in the careful hands of a mature, long-term owner.
