When Mercedes launched the SLK in 1997, it was the first car on the market to have a folding hardtop allowing owners to enjoy the benefits of both open and closed top motoring in one car – something that 20 years on is now commonplace. Coupled with undeniably pretty looks, the car was a great success despite it’s lofty price tag.
This example is finished in a stunning colour combination of Travertine Metallic paint and Quartz/ Siam two tone leather interior – it is believed to be the only one in this combination. The paintwork is in excellent condition and belies it’s 18 years of age. The wheels are particularly outstanding, having a diamond cut/ lacquered finish which really set the car off. All corners are shod with premium Continental tyres.
Mechanically the car is in top condition – it starts on the button and settles to an even, quiet idle. When on the move, the car performs as expected with no nasty knocks or noises. The 2. 3 supercharged engine provides strong performance and is well matched to the autobox, but the ride and refinement tells you that this is unashamedly a cruising classic rather than an out and out sports car.
The inside of the car is a lovely place to be with the Siam bringing a real lift to the classy interior – the turned aluminium facia is also a welcome addition in place of the usual fake wood. The car is well equipped with electric seats in addition to the standard windows and mirrors and of course the ‘party piece’ electric folding hardtop – all work without exception.
All the original book packs are available as are all the (3!) spare keys along with some receipts for servicing carried out. This was done by Mercedes originally but more latterly has been carried out by independent specialists.
This car has clearly been cherished and used sparingly, having covered an average of around 3000 miles per year. In this condition and colour combination, which low mileage, it must surely be one of the best SLKs on the market and represents great value as an entry in to the modern classic car experience.
