∙One off Montgomery Works racer built for the 1933/34 Isle Of Man TT

This motorcycle is a one-off bike built by Montgomery Motorcycles in 1933/1934. It was built as a works DogEared J.A.P racing crossport dry sump engine racer, to be used in the 1934 Isle Of Man TT. Unfortunately, the world financial crisis meant that many of the TT entrants withdrew from the Isle Of Man TT, Montgomery Motorcycles being one of them. 

The bike, (nicknamed Monty), lay in the factory for a number of years until it was purchased by Godfery Littleford of Knowle, who led the bike into its interesting world of motorsport. As an amateur rider he bought the bike to have a go at the TT himself, although the records show he never entered the TT or the Manx. It then looks to have been raced in 1944 by Doug Beasley of Velocette and Excelsior fame, who modified it to run on Methanol and be used as a short circuit racer. 

Then it went to another owner in the late 1940’s, and then finally to the owner prior to the seller in 1963. Monty has been used in various styles of racing including road circuits, sprints, hill climbs and even as a grass track racer.

This lovely Mongomery racer was purchased by the seller around 5 years ago. He knew about the bike, as a friend had owned it since 1963. The former owner also raced the bike for many years until 5 years ago, using it as a sprint bike. Having other commitments meant he was not sprinting as much and decided to sell Monty, and that is when the current seller purchased the Montgomery. 

The bike has had many changes over the years, but it was restored to its normal guise by the previous keeper, who left just a few things that were more suited to sprint racing, such as the alloy wheels and running it on Methanol because it runs cooler. 

The seller, who is an avid classic bike fan and restorer, has changed some things back, such as the wheels, but the bike is still set up for Methanol and because of this the seller has never even started the bike in his 5 year ownership. As Methanol can corrode parts if left sitting there, everything was flushed out, so not to risk any damage being caused by it standing.   

The bike has been put back to how the seller believes it was for the 1933 racing specification. The seller needs the space to finish another project he has on the go, and, unfortunately, Monty has to leave the comfort of the underfloor heated garage in search for a new home

As this is a race bike there is no V5 present.

The history file is impressive to say the least! There are old hand drawn drawings and notes for the frame, headstock, engine, and basically the design of the bike.

Finished in Gloss Black and Silver, the Montgomery looks stunning. The attention to detail is everywhere and it's obvious that, although it's been a race bike, it's been truly looked after.

As mentioned, the bike is now back to the TT spec it was originally designed to. The frame, forks and handlebars are as they were, along with the fuel tank, oil tank and mudguards. The frame, forks and mudguards are finished in Gloss Black, with the fuel tank in Black over Silver, separated with a Gold pinstripe and a twist fuel cap. The handlebar grips are in excellent condition, as is the rubber sprung saddle. 

The wheels are new old stock Dunlop steel wheels, which the seller has had re-spoked with stainless steel spokes and had the rims powdercoated in black to match the bike. The rims also have the “Trade Dunlop Mark made in England” stamped on them. 

These have been covered in some new Avon Speed Master MkII period looking tyres, which are in excellent condition as it has only been pushed with these on. 

The engine residing in the Monty is a 350 cc Dog Eared J.A.P,Cross-port works racing engine, with a  Dry Sump and a racing magneto. 

The engine is just a handful supplied by the Tottenham factory to the most successful manufacturers racing in the TT. 

As mentioned, the bike is set up to run on Methanol, and the seller has never run it since it was drained and cleaned of any remains of Methanol, but he does assure us that everything is running just as it should. The bike can be quite easily set up to run on petrol by altering the carburetor jets.

The gearbox fitted is a rare 4-speed Albion Excelsior foot change close ratio gearbox, which is reported to change gear as it should, with no issues.

What a special one off bike in stunning condition. With a nice racing pedigree and well documented history file with lots of hand drawn drawings and notes, it would be well suited to someone who races classic motorcycles or someone that just loves to collect the classics. 

One thing to say is that this unique bike, really is something quite special to own.
