1950 Vincent Comet

Highlights

  • Significant paperwork collection, including a VOC Certificate of Authenticity
  • Beautifully presented with fantastic paintwork, refurbished seat upholstery and respoked, lined wheels
  • Reportedly riding very well indeed, with ample performance more than capable of keeping up with today’s traffic

The Appeal

Producing some of the fastest and most visceral motorcycles of their era, Vincent is a hallowed name amongst bikers. Gonzo journalist and committed motorcyclist Hunter S. Thompson was utterly smitten with the brand, featuring a Black Shadow in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and riding a number of Vincents himself. The 499 cc Comet was a mainstay of the vincent range between 1935 and 1955, revered for its ninety mph plus performance, alluring styling and innovative engine design.
Here we have an immensely presentable 1950 Comet which has clearly been cherished by all its total of six owners. It’s in excellent condition both mechanically and cosmetically, offering an intoxicating ride that still feels quick to the modern rider. The frame is not original, as is proved by the VOC Certificate of Authenticity and yet the bike’s period correct specification has been maintained. It benefits from a great deal of sympathetic renovation in present ownership and as a result, is amongst the smartest and most well sorted Vincent Comets still in existence.

The History and Paperwork

  • Five previous keepers
  • 11,646 miles indicated - although the true figure is unknown
  • V5C present
  • Exempt from road tax and MOT testing
  • Significant collection of Vincent literature with instructional material and parts lists
  • Several old MOT certificates and logbooks are also included
  • VOC Certificate of Authenticity
  • Not matching numbers as the frame has been replaced at some point - these bikes are built around the engine, which is a stressed member in their design

The Condition

  • Fantastic overall condition, without being too pristine to enjoy
  • Period correct black paint with gold tank decals
  • Excellent paintwork with no bubbling, notable blemishes or scratches
  • The tank, guards and frame all appear free front dents
  • The polished rear mudguard does exhibits some deep scratches, but these do not detract from the bike’s overall appearance
  • All the chrome plated componentry presents really well
  • Only light wear to the rubber pegs and grips
  • The speedometer and ammeter both read clearly
  • Equipped with a single mirror on the right-hand handlebar
  • Re-spoked and lined wheels shod with new tyres
  • Restored seat upholstery
  • Equipped with centre stand and side stand
We’d say the condition of this Vincent is just right for those who want a bike easily smart enough to display without it being too perfect to ride as the manufacturer originally intended. The paintwork is a particular highlight with this example and retains a far better finish than many motorcycles of this vintage. All has been kept to period specifications, ensuring an authentic ‘50s riding experience. With no corrosion in sight and refurbished wheels ensuring a smooth, safe ride, we wouldn’t change a thing.

The Mechanics

  • 499cc OHV Single
  • Innovative double-valve guide arrangement
  • The engine acts as a stressed member within the frame
  • Four-speed gearbox
  • BTH magneto and new silencer fitted
  • The vendor reports that it starts readily and runs well
  • Ample performance to satisfy the modern rider and keep up with today’s traffic
While these bikes look thoroughly antiquated, their performance is quite the opposite and this Comet is more than capable of high-speed riding far in excess of what you’d need to enjoy yourself on the road. We’re assured that it starts easily, runs well and handles beautifully. We’re not informed of any issues and the vendor comments that the bike is ready to enjoy.

Summary

For those seeking a stylish vintage motorcycle you could actually use on a regular basis to cover large distances, this Vincent Comet ticks a lot of boxes. Presented in fantastic condition and ready to ride, this is an excellent opportunity to add your name to the esteemed list of Vincent riders.
