The Appeal
The Alpine was Rootes’ Transatlantic-themed entry into the busy post-war two-seater roadster market. With its fins, peppy 1.5L engine and Bond connections, it found ready buyers.
This pretty Series 1 car is from the first year of production and was sold new, as a fully-finished car, by South African dealer Stanley Motors. It has spent its subsequent 66 years leading a very cossetted life, most of it safely 1800m above sea level in Johannesburg. Naturally, as a South African car, it is a stranger to salt or inclement road conditions. It is currently part of the vendor’s large private collection and held in dry storage.
The pictures are clear about how good this car is. The paint is lustrous, and the panel fit flush. The pairing of Rootes’ Glen Green with red vinyl works well and delivers a very distinctive car. The ‘Rally Master’ engine is said to be a matching numbers unit.
The car arrives with the buyer with a fresh service and carburettor tune-up.
The vendor says:
"There cannot be many Series One Alpines that survive today in the dry and solid state that this remarkable and beautiful Alpine is in. One of the finest of the 1950s roadsters, an enticing and enjoyable classic."
