Firmly aimed at the sporting riders of the late ‘50s who modified their bikes for club racing, Velocette decided to launch their own Clubman racing bike with increased engine compression, close ratio gears, an Amal TT carburettor and sporting rear footpegs.

This 1960 example is one of these limited edition ‘Racers for the Road’ and features all of the above performance parts along with a BTH magneto and lowered handlebars for that hunkered down racer feel.

With only 3 keepers from new, this Venom has clearly been cherished throughout its life and it is now in need of a new home.

We understand that the previous owner carried out some light, sympathetic restoration work.

We’re told that the frame has been painted and it would appear the chrome work has been renewed along with some paintwork to the other fixings and fittings.

Testament to the quality of the restoration work, the alloy engine casings and brake plates are finished to a high standard, without being excessively shiny. The vendor informs us that some stainless-steel fixings have been fitted to improve both the overall look and durability of the frame.

The fuel tank is finished in a dark Racing green, with what would appear to be very expertly hand-painted gold pinstripes.

Venoms were supplied from the factory equipped with the Amal TT carb, a manually adjusted BTH magneto and, of course, a high compression piston providing 9.1:1 compression. 

Although not started for the photoshoot, we’re told by the vendor, a vintage Rolls Royce & Bentley restorer, that the magneto provides a strong spark and there is excellent engine compression.

There is a knack to starting any big single cylinder engine, but once this is learnt, this Velocette will burst into life.

It has been run but not ridden during the current ownership, so a good check over before taking it out on the road would be advisable. 

As the Clubman edition, this Velocette really evokes the spirit of those ‘50s racing pioneers. 

Finished to such a high standard, it would certainly make a great addition to any classic motorcycle collection.
