The Appeal
The third generation Chevrolet Impala made its debut in 1961 and carried the Impala name through the early sixties, a name which has been used as recently as 2020.
This Sport Coupe features a ‘bubbleback’ roof, with its large curved rear window and pillarless design which aids the driver’s visibility and the feeling of spaciousness in the cabin.
Having undergone previous sympathetic restoration work, this Impala remains in excellent condition and still appears to be largely the same as when it left the factory in 1961. It has reportedly covered very few miles in recent years and is now ready to be enjoyed.
The History and Paperwork
- First registered in March 1961

The Interior

Opening the door to this Impala reveals another world. It’s like stepping back in time to another age, with the well preserved interior inviting you to come in and soak up the atmosphere.
The upholstery is said to be in original condition, and certainly it is well preserved. Yes, the carpets are looking a little threadbare in places, but we think this just adds to the car’s charm and sense of history.
The headlining is said to be clean and secure, with one notable mark in the centre, while the driver is presented with a space-age dashboard with plenty of chrome and bright red touches. All the controls appear to be in good condition and well presented.
One of the most striking things about this Impala’s interior is the feeling of space, not just because this is a big American sized car, but because of the pillarless design and acres of glass affording excellent visibility all round. And to the rear there is a commodious boot with plenty of space, even with the full size spare wheel.
The Exterior

There’s no escaping the fact that American cars of this era are big by European standards. In fact, it looks like you could happily park a Fiat 500 on both the bonnet and the boot of this Chevrolet. And the flashes of red and chrome along the sides of the car finish the look nicely.
The grey paint appears to be in great condition throughout, with no reported marks or blemishes. Similarly, the external trim is in fine condition, the bumpers, handles and window surrounds are smart and well presented, with no obvious signs of pitting or damage.
We are told by the vendor that this Impala has received some welding during its restoration, but that there is now no damage or corrosion to the underside. The steel wheels sport flamboyant chrome hubcaps, but the tyres have perished and will need to be replaced.
The Mechanics

With its 4.6 litre Chevrolet V8 under the bonnet, this Impala is designed to cruise happily along the motorway without issue, its comfortable suspension ironing out the creases in the road for a fantastic ride.
The vendor tells us that the car accelerates well, changes gear as it should, and stops in a straight line. The exhaust is said to sound ‘booming’, and there are no reported leaks or smoke.
We can see that some of the brake hoses have been replaced, which is reassuring, although we’re told that the car has seen little use in recent years.
Summary
In all, this appears to be a very nicely preserved example of a Chevrolet Impala. And the Sport Coupe styling looks great with its panoramic windows and sleek design.
We’re sure this car will make a great vehicle of choice for cruising around the countryside or along the motorway. And it’s certainly not short on space.
