The Appeal

The inimitable Volkswagen ‘beach buggy’ came about when Californian engineering genius Bruce Meyers set out to dominate the thriving dune racing scene. To go fast on sand, you needed something light - something most American automobiles certainly weren’t. That’s where the Volkswagen Beetle comes in.

Small, simple and with excellent traction thanks to a wait bias over the driven rear axle, the Beetle was practically made for soft sand. Meyers threw away the bodywork, shortened the floor pan, souped up the engine and came up with his own glass fibre body. The resulting ‘Meyers Manx’ not only one races, it also captured the hearts of a generation. Jimi Hendrix had one, so did Steve McQueen... In short, beach buggies were cool.
Since then, there have been a great many novel variations on the original formula, and we’re delighted to offer this 1967 GP example based upon the floor pan and mechanicals of the Volkswagen Beetle 1500. It was built by the previous owner to a high standard and has since been well looked after. The 1,500 cc engine has been substituted for a twin-port 1,600 cc unit, which has been tuned on a rolling road and equipped with a large aftermarket exhaust - hence the “If it’s too loud you’re too old” sticker…
We’re assured that the beach buggy always gets plenty of attention wherever it goes and is immense fun to drive.. Everyone should experience a beach buggy at some point, so with summer now finally here, this is the perfect time.

The History and Paperwork

  • Acquired by the vendor in May 2017 from a garage selling on behalf of the creator
  • Correctly registered with the DVLA as a historic vehicle
  • A substantial quantity of build paperwork is present including a wiring diagram
  • 15 former registered keepers - but just one since converted to a beach buggy
  • Offered for the sale as the vendor hasn’t had the time to enjoy the buggy as much as they would have liked and now have a Type 2 campervan project
  • The vendor recommends collection via a trailer if the buyer lives a long distance away
  • 14,340 miles indicated
  • Exempt from road tax and MOT testing
  • V5C present

The Condition

  • Short-wheelbase chassis
  • Glass fibre GP bodywork
  • The vendor has added some meaningful stickers during their ownership
  • Image alloy wheels fitted and in very good condition
  • 265/35ZR18 tyres
  • Sports seats complete with seat belts
  • Two rear seats (currently without belts)
  • Equipped with a waterproof Bikini top of the vendor’s own design
  • Full roll cage including side impact protection
  • Full undertray
  • We’re assured that there is no corrosion present whatsoever
  • The vendor points out a small scratch to the bodywork above the front number plate
  • Offside indicators not currently working and neither are the brake lights as a new switch is required

The Mechanics

  • 1,600 cc VW twin-port air-cooled flat-four
  • Four-speed manual gearbox
  • Empi gear shift
  • Press-button ignition start
  • Tuned on a rolling road following the installation of the current engine
  • The nearside rear brake bleed nipple reportedly has some issues although doesn’t leak - the vendor provides a complete rear drum assembly included in the sale
  • Aftermarket ‘canon’ exhaust which is quite loud
  • We’re informed that it runs and drives well - the perfect summer car
