1967 Volkswagen Type 2 Splitscreen Westfalia Campervan

Highlights

  • Restored in 2010-2013
  • 1500 drivetrain
  • Refitted Westfalia interior

The Appeal

The VW campervan is an ever-present darling of the classic car scene. With its versatility, simplicity and charm, it makes an excellent choice both as a practical daily and a fun classic.
Presented with a subtle colour scheme and original style Westfalia interior, this late-model splitscreen campervan has bags of potential and has already had significant amounts of work carried out on it by the current owner. As it’s now no longer being used, it’s time for someone else to discover the joys of life with a Type 2 camper!

The History and Paperwork

  • First registered in 1967
  • Imported to the UK in 2010
  • Restored over 3 years between 2010-2013
  • Historic vehicle status: tax and MOT exempt
  • Maintenance manual included
  • Receipts going back to 1984
  • Import documentation
  • New cover included
  • Reluctant sale as vehicle is no longer being used

The Interior

  • Beige vinyl upholstery
  • Retrimmed during restoration
  • Refitted Westfalia interior
  • Retro-style sound system

The front cabin area is tastefully trimmed in subtle shades of beige to complement the exterior finish. Both seats are finished in light beige vinyl with darker piping. There is some wear through use showing on both seats, with the driver’s squab displaying the most wear, as usual.
Similarly, the door cards are beige vinyl items, with coordinated carpets in the cabin. The door cards look to be in good condition, while the carpets are presented in a reasonable state, but are in need of a good valet. Above, the headlining is tight and shows no evidence of sagging or significant damage.
Looking at the body coloured dashboard and driving controls, they look to be in nice condition, with some evidence of wear and use, but nothing that would concern us. The original odometer has been replaced with a modern digital readout, so the 3,811 miles it currently reports should not be seen as accurate. A modern retro-style sound system has been fitted, which features CD, USB, Aux and Radio functions - a nice touch of modernity. It should be noted that the needle in the fuel gauge is missing, otherwise we are informed by the owner that all of the vehicle’s features function as they should.
In the rear compartment, the floor has been finished with beige and tan checkerboard pattern vinyl tiles, with complementary checker pattern curtains. As part of the restoration process when the camper was imported, the Westfalia interior was refitted. It benefits from traditional ply panelling, with multiple cubbies and storage cupboards, a laminated picnic table mounted to the inside of the side door and cushioned benches, the largest of which folds down into the usual rock’n’roll style double bed.

The Exterior

  • Lotus White and Savannah Beige two-tone paintwork
  • Barn-style doors to the passenger side
  • Classic splitscreen front end
  • Safari windows
  • Bodywork repaired and resprayed during restoration
  • Westfalia roof rack included in sale

When so many Type 2 campers have been finished in wild and lurid colour schemes, it’s refreshing to see one wearing subtle and refined two-tone paintwork. The respray was completed during the camper’s 3 year restoration from 2010-2013. During this period, the owner tells us that any needed bodywork repairs, including welding work, was carried out.
The paintwork looks to have been well finished, and really suits the vehicle. There are a few areas that any new owner may wish to address, with small amounts of corrosion beginning to show in numerous places, including the front door edges and shuts, front arches, sills, the front rain channel and the rear hatch. There are also a couple of splits in the paint on the front of the vehicle that are beginning to corrode. Having said that, all of the panels look to be straight and undamaged, with no evidence of significant corrosion we could see. We are informed by the vendor that the underside of the camper is in fair condition.
All of the external trim appears to be complete and sound, with the bumpers looking nice and smart. Some of the brightwork is showing signs of surface corrosion, including the light surrounds and wiper arms, but otherwise it all appears to be nice and solid.
The camper is wearing the traditional painted steel wheels with chrome hubcaps. These are shod in tyres which the owner tells us have good tread on them.

The Mechanics

  • 1,493cc flat-four engine
  • 4-speed manual transmission

This charming vehicle is blessed with the meatier 1500 drivetrain, that 1.5-litre air-cooled flat-four providing reasonable amounts of power and a truly charismatic soundtrack. It’s twinned with a traditional 4-speed manual transmission.
While we’re assured by the vendor that the vehicle is in good mechanical order, the engine bay itself has surface corrosion evident, both to the bay and the engine components.
We’re informed by the owner that the steering box has been reconditioned in this camper, and that it drives just as it should, accelerating and moving through the gears with no smoke, leaks or unusual noises.

Summary

Splitscreen Type 2 campers remain an ever-present feature of the British seaside and countryside for a reason – they offer a way to experience simpler, gentler, happier times. With irresistible looks, a burbling, happy drivetrain and a legion of fans and companies offering parts and aftermarket modifications, it’s easy to see why they are so loved.
This example benefits from an older restoration that restored the camper to how it might have looked when it left the factory. We thinks its understated colour scheme and original style Westfalia interior really mark it out as something unique. If you’re after a charming, original style camper, look no further. With a little work, this could soon be the smartest van on the campsite.
