The Appeal

Everyone should own a Land Rover at some point in their lives. These simply engineered 4x4s are amongst the most usable classic cars around; perfectly suited to family days out, a spot of off-roading or even to be put to work. Many Land Rovers have lived hard lives, so it’s rare to find a straight-original example in such good condition as this short-wheelbase 1969 Series IIA.
Resplendent in a coat of Limestone which was renewed last year, it’s a beautifully preserved example inside, out and underneath. It benefits from chassis refurbishment during previous ownership and a recently overhauled interior. Collectors will note the coveted Safari roof and free-wheeling front hubs which make this a truly stand-out example. The vendor reports that the 2.25-litre petrol engine ticks away smoothly and the Land Rover drives very well - proving great fun once you’ve mastered the technique.

  • In present ownership since 1st November 2022

The Condition

  • Limestone paintwork
  • Desirable short-wheelbase specification
  • Equipped with a vented Safari roof
  • The majority of the paintwork was renewed last year and still looks great
  • The chassis was refurbished by the previous owner and appears very sound
  • No signs of electrolytic corrosion to the ‘Birmabright’ alloy bodywork
  • Unusually straight for a Land Rover of this vintage
  • OEM steel wheels fitted
  • The tyres are not heavily worn although the vendor notes that they are a little old
  • The rear bulkhead and rear crossmember appear very sound
  • Inside, all looks really tidy and quite original
  • Correct ‘Hardura’ mat set fitted
  • Recent new headlining and door cards
  • The rear aftermarket rear seats are not properly affixed at present as the Land Rover has been insured as a three-person vehicle in current ownership

The Mechanics

  • 2,286 cc four-cylinder petrol engine
  • All looks reasonably tidy under the bonnet
  • Original four-speed manual gearbox with synchromesh on third and fourth
  • Manual/unassisted steering
  • Selectable low-range and four-wheel drive
  • Fitted with free-wheeling front hubs which we’re informed are in good order
  • The vendor reports that the Land Rover drives well in all gears and the low-range/four-wheel drive operates correctly
  • We’re informed that it’s good fun to drive once you’ve mastered the technique
