The Appeal
The perfect mix of luxury and performance the boxy form of the W114 & 115 Mercedes’ has now become legendary. With this being a W114 variant it benefits from a larger 2.5l inline-six engine, a great engine that is known for its bulletproof reliability.
This W114 started its life out in the sunny climes of New Zealand, spending the first part of its life in a hotter climate has extended its life significantly as it's been able to avoid any salty roads or other issues that blight English examples. It ended up coming to the UK in the early 2000s to start a new life and has spent the past few years of its life in Brighton with the current owner, who has loved every minute with this luxury classic.
When this car arrived with the new owner it did not look like it does now, after some extensive work to the interior and exterior, which included a change from a rather dull brown to this fetching red, it now sits today in excellent condition and is raring to go on its next big adventure with its next owner.
One of the best parts of this car is by far the interior, with enough legroom to land a plane in and seats as comfortable as armchairs it is the place to be, and thanks to its 2.5l and smooth automatic box it is a great cruiser. The coupe variants of these rarely come up for sale and with this one being in such great condition this is your opportunity to grab a great example.
• Leaving the factory in 1972 it heads straight to New Zealand where it would stay until it was imported to the UK and registered with the DVLA in 2007
• Since then it has had a few owners but the current owner has spent a lot of time and money getting it to this condition
• The earliest invoices are from 2001 when the owner at the time spent $1,100 on what appears to be a rather thorough service
• There are a few New Zealand MOT style certificates
• To show it moved to the UK in 2007 there is an invoice for £1,042 which references the shipping costs to get it into the country
• A few small invoices are present until one of the previous owners spends a lot of money between 2016-17
• Some of this work is extensive with some invoices totalling well over £1,000 for works like welding, servicing, and other general maintenance
• There are a few invoices from the current ownership period one for a new centre armrest, some parts that had to come from Germany, carpets, exterior side trims, and a new radiator
• In May 2021 it went through a 12,000-mile service where some other work was carried out to make sure that she was tip top
• The new owner will be able to sift through this paperwork at their pleasure • New MOT will be supplied with the vehicle
The place to be in any old Mercedes is the interior, a space filled with high-end materials it is unlike any modern car out there. This 250 CE is presented in great interior condition with all the black leather seats showing little signs of their age. Not only are these seats in good condition, but they are also huge and comfortable making any trip a breeze. With there being an invoice for new carpets it is no surprise that these too are in immaculate condition looking as good as the day they were put in the car.
Like many classic cars, the dashboard has a brilliant wooden finish, with these wooden accents presented in a dark colour it blends nicely with the rest of the black details on the interior. The only real area that shows its age a little is the top of the dashboard, there is a slight crack in the plastic but when the rest of the interior is in such good condition this should not detract from the overall appeal of the interior in this classic Mercedes.
One excellent feature of this 250 CE are the windows, with no pillars it means that all four windows can retract leaving a huge open space. This is the perfect solution for the unpredictable English weather, you can enjoy the feeling of the wind in your hair, but stay dry should the heavens open. It should also be said that these windows are electric, going up and down as they should at the flick of the switch.
This car has been loved and cherished by the current owner, and also the previous owners, it is thanks to them that it is now presented in such great condition. Whoever has the pleasure of owning this car for its next chapter will be doing it in class and in comfort.
Any old Mercedes looks beautiful, but this 250 CE finished in its rather fetching red paintwork with all the correct brightwork attached, looks utterly stunning. You would be hard-pressed to find another 250 CE, let alone another 250 CE in this exterior condition.
The W114/W115 were designed following the three-box styling method, 1 box for the engine, 1 box for the passenger compartment, and one final box for the boot section. This design philosophy has made sure for a brilliantly proportioned large coupe, with its two large doors and longer boot it looks sleeker than its four-door cousins.
With the paintwork that has recently been carried out, it is no surprise that the paint is in great condition, and with all the trim being correct it is a beautiful car. It is one of those cars you can't help but look at when you’re walking away from it, and with only 21,000 CE’s ever being built for the world it is fairly rare to find one that looks this good. The Mechanics
• The 2.5l inline six runs perfectly
• The gearbox is smooth and positive
• All-round great runner
When the W114 was introduced to the world in the late 60s it was an incredibly capable car. Mercedes made sure that this was their first car since the end of the second world war to benefit from new suspension and new engines. With this being the W114 250 CE variant, it is fitted with a 2.5L inline-six that still, to this day, runs perfectly. But then it would, old Mercedes are known for being bulletproof. As you can see from the rear, this is fitted with a 4-speed automatic gearbox. Thanks to this gearbox you can drive this car very easily. With the box performing well under any condition.
As we approach summer and the days get hotter a prospective buyer should be happy to hear that this car has recently been fitted with a new radiator, hopefully banishing any potential issues with overheating. Along with the new radiator it has also recently had a full service and safety check.
Although this car does not require an MOT due to its age, it currently has one. This test only picked up on one advisory which is a testament to the overall condition of this car. The next owner will be getting an excellent car for their money, a car that will be at the heart of many happy memories to come.
What we have here is a stunning piece of German engineering, which is presented for sale in great condition. Throughout its history it has been cared for properly which will now make sure that this car lives on well into the future. With the CE being an extremely rare variant of the W114 it is not every day you see one for sale, so make sure that you don’t miss out.
With the interior being spacious and comfortable, a boot big enough to move houses with, and an exterior that looks stunning this is the car to have as we head into the summer months.
