1974 Rover P6 2200 SC

Highlights

  • Low mileage, low owner example
  • Recently had around £6000 spent on recommissioning work
  • Presents in wonderful condition

The Appeal

Winner of the first ever “European car of the year” award back in 1964, the Rover P6 has always been a greatly appreciated car, and for good reason.

Stylish, comfortable and backed by a strong and loving community even to this day, the mighty Rover is undoubtedly a great all round classic car.
A later series 2 variant, the car presented here, as denoted by its badging, boasts a better performing larger displacement 2.2 litre engine, whilst retaining the exquisite and classic  styling found on its predecessor, the series 1.
What we have here in GUU 309N is an example that really is something special.

A rather unique specification, blending a rare exterior colour with even rarer brown interior carpeting, this low mileage Brit has seen very limited usage throughout its lifetime and in recent months, has been treated to extensive recommissioning work and as such presents in great condition.

The History and Paperwork

  • Accompanied by selection of invoices from specialist workshops for recent recommissioning work, totalling over £6000
  • Original Rover P6 repair operation manual
  • Rover 2200 owners manual
  • Collection of old MOT certificates
  • Paperwork detailing the cars mileage over the years
  • Correct V5 registration document present with the car
  • Detailed report of the work undertaken on the car at the request of the current owner
First registered in 01/11/1974, this 2200 has seen just three owners (including the current owner) in its lifetime.

The previous owner, a relative of the current owner had owned the car since the 1980’s, a print engineer by trade, the owner undertook nearly all work required on the car themselves, hence the lack of older service history and the extensive repair operation manual.

Throughout this ownership the car amassed incredibly minimal mileage as highlighted by the mileage report written up with the car.
After the prior owners' passing, the current owner inherited the car and set about the recommissioning work, spending around £6000 to have the car brought back to great running standard by a local specialist workshop, as the car had spent some time sat dormant previously.

The Interior

  • Near immaculate interior
  • Rare brown carpeting in the boot
  • Highly original with some great factory features
Smart black and navy seats, standard carpeting and a marvellous sweeping dash piece, the cabin of the 2200 is certainly a winning combination.

Having covered just 42 thousand miles throughout its time on the road, the interior unsurprisingly presents in great clean condition. Much of the inside has seen very limited usage and thus there is a distinct lack of wear to be seen throughout the cabin.
Having borne the test of time incredibly well, all of the seating in the Rover looks to be in good solid order, neat upholstery can be seen all round along with good strong bolstering and stitching. The only notable point to mention is some wear to the bottom drivers seat cushion, however the material is still of a good standard.

At the sides we are presented with four great door panels, simplistic with just some small chrome furnishings and quality wood veneer cappings at the top.
The absolute feature piece within the car is of course the excellent recessed sweeping dash piece. In truly impeccable condition, the panel combines black upholstery, wood veneer and a wonderful central clock and horizontal gauge cluster, all of which really looks the part nestled within the Rover.

Just below sits a neat selection of controls, smaller gauges and switchgear all of which is of a good standard and reported to function well.
In the case of most cars, the boot area is something of a minor detail, rather simplistic with not much to note, however when it comes to this particular car, there is something rather unique hiding behind the bootlid.

A boot fully upholstered in brown carpeting, including a bespoke spare tyre cover. According to a Rover specialist and historian who examined the car, this is an incredibly rare factory option almost never seen on P6s, and certainly a far cry from the normal black seen here.

The Exterior

  • Excellent and rare Pearl Grey paint scheme
  • Good overall exterior condition
  • Well preserved quality chrome throughout
  • Will require minor recommissioning to make perfect
Classy and stylish, a shape that's instantly recognisable.

With a design drawn up to appeal to the emerging young executive market at the time, the P6’s sweeping lines were a far cry from the P4 from which it took over from.
Whilst most P6s were finished in a simple brown or blue, this particular car has an air of uniqueness to it in the form of its factory Lunar Grey exterior paint scheme. Certainly one of the less common colours on this model, it looks utterly excellent on the Rover and thoroughly makes it stand out from the crowd.
The paintwork itself is largely of a good standard however there are some notable blemishes that would ideally benefit from some attention to bring the car up to the standard it deserves.

Whilst not rusting thanks to the use of aluminium in the body panels, there are some notable blisters to be seen on the bootlid and bonnet, along with some general more minor imperfections around the front of the car.
The lashings of chrome trim and embellishments seen dotted around the car are all in great shape, exuding a great shine and exhibiting very little, if anything in the way of wear and patina. The same of course, can be said for the front and rear chrome bumpers and overriders.
At ground level we find four great wheels with factory chrome Rover trims, all of which are in good original condition, as previously mentioned in the interior section of this listing, there is a fifth full size spare wheel nestled within the boot area.

The Mechanics

  • Larger displacement 2.2 litre model
  • Subject to extensive mechanical recomissioning under current ownership
  • Great solid example
Left in the trusting hands of “Just Historic Cars”, a local specialist workshop, the Rover was given a thorough going over upon acquisition by its current owner.

The car was fully inspected to assess its solidity, this included the removal of the seats and interior trim as this is an area known to rust on these cars, however this was not the case for this particular example which has been reported to be incredibly solid.
In addition to this, the engine was given a thorough refurbishment including a full service, new exhaust valves and a water pump. A replacement master cylinder was also fitted at this time before the fuel system was extensively cleaned, with all recent work costing around £6000.
As a result of all the work and time spent on the car, the Rover now fires into life almost instantly before settling into a comfortable idle. It should be noted however that there is a slight blow from the mid section of the exhaust at present.
Whilst it hasn’t seen public roads in some considerable time now, the P6 is regularly driven on the private roads and estate in which it is stored in order to keep everything fresh.

Summary

There’s very little not to like with a Rover P6, especially one such as this.

An incredibly rare specification boasting a low number of owners and low mileage, the P6 has seen high levels of refurbishment in recent months and needs very little to look absolutely perfect.

For one who wants to stand out from the crowd, this lunar grey beast is the perfect tool.
It’s fair to say that GUU 309N would be a welcome addition to anyone’s collection.
