The Appeal

Back when mopeds were the ultimate sign of rebellion. A change in legislation in the early 1970s meant gone were the days where the youth of the time could jump on any high capacity offering from Norton, BSA or the emerging Japanese brands. A 50cc limit was now imposed for young riders and manufacturers had to act quickly to capitalise on it. What resulted was an entirely new market for sporty 50cc bikes designed to appease the young and rebellious, one of the most notable of which was the now legendary Yamaha FS1.
Designed with performance in mind the 50cc, two stroke single cylinder, FS1, or FS1-E in the case of English models, was impeccably styled, came in a range of bold colour schemes and was fitted with a set of pedals in order to make them legal for road use. These “Fizzies” as they were affectionately known became the dream of every youth showing them that they needn’t ride around on the dull, joyless mopeds and low capacity bikes they had previously been stuck with, and would go on to become a cult classic motorcycle.
This 1974 FS1 is primed and ready to serve as a slice of nostalgia from those glory days of low capacity motorcycling. Having been exceptionally well refurbished by a previous owner it stands today in excellent form and must surely be on the best presented examples available on the market today.

The History and Paperwork

  • Early example of the FS1-E, manufactured 1974
  • Purchased by the current owner to keep as part of a fleet of classic car and motorcycles
  • As we understand the bike was subject to an extensive restoration and rebuild at the hands of the previous owner
  • Whilst we are somewhat lacking paperwork, the quality of the rebuild really does speak for itself and has clearly been done very well
  • V5 registration document present with the bike
  • Both tax and MOT exempt due to the Yamaha’s age and historic status
  • Dry stored throughout current ownership

The Condition

  • Marvellously well presented example of the legendary bike
  • Understood to have been thoroughly refurbished by the previous owner
  • The bike sits in a glorious shade of what we believe to be “Popsicle Purple” a genuine factory metallic deep purple hue
  • The paintwork throughout is of an impeccable standard and presents as such, in a like new state
  • Contrasting white decoration and embellishments which are of a similarly high quality
  • Brilliant chrome trim used throughout, exhibiting an excellent gloss shine
  • Handlebars and adjoining grips and switchgear all present very well, with the controls understood to be in great working order
  • Good quality black Yamaha seat, with great upholstery and neat stitching
  • High quality spoked wheels front and rear
  • Single Yamaha gauge is of a wonderful quality
  • Framework and fuel tank are in solid clean shape
  • Lighting throughout is in fine fettle
  • Single chrome exhaust, presented in outstanding order

The Mechanics

  • Excellent single cylinder air cooled, two stroke engine
  • 49cc capacity
  • Engine and surrounding ancillaries present in brilliantly clean form
  • As we understand the bike was extensively refurbished from a mechanical perspective by the previous owner. The quality and appearance of the mechanical side of this bike would certainly attest to that
  • Factory fitted pedals are still present and look to be in good order
  • Front and rear shocks appear clean and are understood to be working well
  • Fires into life comfortably and with ease
  • Reported to be in good overall mechanical order, providing a wonderful riding experience
  • Vendor advises that as the bike has been used sparingly it may benefit from a service however it rides nicely as is

Summary

It's a bike that sings of the 1970s, heavy rock music and rebellious youth, the FS1-E, Fizzie is a wonderful legacy from a golden era of motorcycling. In its deep purple splendour this marvellously well presented bike gives buyers a wonderful opportunity to acquire what is now a very rare and highly significant slice of motorcycling history.
If you’re looking to relive those glory days, look no further than this wonderful FS1.
