The Simca 1000 was a very French interpretation of the classic 'three-volume' saloon. Its lightness meant that it only needed a small engine at the rear. Spacious and reliable, it proved so popular that it remained in production for 18 years.
Along the way, the doyenne of small sports cars, Abarth, spotted the potential of the "Mille" model and proposed a series of "sports" versions. Simca decided to join the movement, and introduced the Rallye model in 1970. European drivers loved them, seeing them as agile, fast and light. Three versions were available until 1978, with the '2' version from 1973 to 1977 adding twin carburettors to boost power to an impressive 82bhp. All this in a car weighing just 875 kg.
