1977 Porsche 911 Flat Nose Conversion

Highlights

  • A 911 with the looks of a Flat Nosed 930S
  • Professionally converted using authentic Porsche components
  • Unique colour for a Porsche

The Background

The flat nose, or ‘Flachbau’ came about from the success of the specially developed racing 935 cars. The looks caught the imagination of the public and soon Porsche developed the 930 S Slant Nose which was effectively a road version of the 935. The 930 S Flat Nose was only available through Porsche’s Special Order Programme and were as much as 60% more expensive than the standard 930.

Owners were beginning to ask if the conversions could be made available to retro convert the 911 so Porsche developed the all steel conversion kit to satisfy this demand. Naturally, it has been copied by other companies that make either plastic or fibreglass versions, but If you want authenticity, it has to be the proper Porsche steel set of parts.

The History

This particular 911 is the 2.7 naturally aspirated S version and was originally owned by a Supercar Dealer from Virginia in the USA. This owner had the conversion done in the mid 80s professionally using all authentic Porsche factory parts.

The colour was changed from dark red to the colour you see today. The car eventually changed hands some years later and found its way to Hungary where our current owner purchased it and brought it to the UK 2 years ago.

The Paperwork

The car is currently being registered in the UK so a new V5 document and age representative plates will be available to the successful bidder. There is a small quantity of earlier documentation showing some history

The Exterior

The exterior colour is unusual with a slight purple shade on top of silver. The finish is good and there is a deep shine to the car. There doesn’t appear to be any defects in the paint other than on the bonnet where some micro blistering has occurred. The fabric roof that is manually raised or lowered is in good condition and secures firmly.

The rims have been replaced more recently and are in excellent condition without any signs of kerbing. The headlights pop up on command as they should without any hesitation.

The Interior

The sumptuous leather interior is showing little sign of excessive wear and the seats remain comfortable and the bolsters are supportive. There is no trace of a smoker having been in the car as there are no odours or burns anywhere.  A new Speedometer has been fitted recently and all other instruments work as they should as does all the switchgear with satisfying Germanic positivity.

Being left-hand drive shouldn’t be seen as an issue because it does seem to add to the authentic feel of the more expensive 930 S Flachbau on which this car plays tribute.

The Mechanics

The aspirated flat six bursts into life eagerly from the key and has a steady tick over. The engine has been treated to something of a cosmetic make-over at the same time the conversion was made.

The present owner has not needed to work on the car since its purchase and all mechanicals seem to be in full working order. Clutch and gear selection is crisp and direct.

The Appeal

A Porsche isn’t exactly a car that goes un-noticed and this one will certainly turn some heads. A cool and interesting colour matched with a typical late 70s interior colour. That ‘Whale Tail’ is just as iconic and serves to accentuate the professionally converted nose. The original factory built flat nosed 930s are extremely rare and command astonishing prices but here is your opportunity to get all the looks without spending the bucks.

An original 930 Flachbau might be as rare as hen’s teeth, but to be fair there aren’t many of these conversions about either. This one has been properly done using all the right steel parts straight from Stuttgart. You might be missing the Turbocharger of the original but you are certainly not missing out on the sheer impact this car creates. Hood up or down you’ll feel like Crockett and Tubbs on a day out, just don’t try and use your brick sized phone behind the wheel.
