The Appeal

Radical isn’t a word normally associated with Aston Martin but that is exactly what the William Towns-designed Lagonda was. Outside there was chiselled bodywork bereft of curves, inside a focus on technology, including a digital dashboard.
The running gear was more traditional, deriving from Aston Martin’s V8 GT and featuring the glorious Tadek Marek V8. Complexity and high cost suppressed sales but the car stayed in production for 14 years. The final Series 4 cars of 1987 were extensively restyled by Towns, offering a smoother, more modern aesthetic that should have kept it in production longer than the three years it managed.
Just 106 Series 4 cars left the factory, of which only 34 were RHD like this one. It was the third from last car built and the only one finished in tasteful Rolls Royce Royal Blue. The subsequent history is fully documented and verifies the very low mileage.
Recently released from a high end collection with £5,000 of work by Aston Martin Works to prepare it for sale, it is in collector-quality condition. This is arguably one of the best condition and best specified examples of a car that is attracting increasing enthusiast interest.

As stated above, the vehicle was recently showcased by Harry Metcalfe on 'Harry's Garage' youtube channel, to which the video can be watching at the following link - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sjPXpRttH2M

  • First UK registered on 11th May 1998 when it returned to these shores
  • Documented 22,918 miles from new
  • Thick history file with extensive Aston Martin Works maintenance
  • Maintained by Aston Martin Works for the first eight years of its life
  • Class winner at several AMOC concours events in hands of previous owner

  • Most recently serviced in April 2023 by Aston Martin Works at cost of £5,405
  • Six registered keepers
  • Original handbooks and service books
  • Exemplary MOT history confirming low mileage and just one minor advisory since 2006
  • MOT to 15th May 2024 with no advisories
  • 35,377 kms (21,982 miles) showing on last MOT test
This RHD car was delivered from the factory on 24th May 1990, a few months after Lagonda production officially ended.  It was the 3rd from last car built and the only one finished in Rolls Royce Royal Blue, a colour that unquestionably suits the updated Towns lines.
It was originally delivered to a customer in Guernsey where it remained until May 1998, being regularly service by Aston Martin Works during this time. It was then first registered in the UK, passing through three registered keepers in 25 years. One of these keepers was an enthusiastic AMOC member and entered the car for various Club concours events where it took several class wins.
In 2015 it passed into a private collection, where it joined classic Bentleys and Rolls Royce. It has always been maintained by Aston Martin Works during this keeper’s tenure, most recently being serviced in April 2023 at a cost of over £5,000.
The history file is extensive and supports the low mileage and sense of a highly maintained car, mainly by the Works. The MOT history contains just one very minor advisory back to 2006 and verifies the mileage.

The Condition

  • Unmarked Royal Blue paintwork, which was unique on a Series 4
  • Connolly leather Parchment leather with blue piping
  • Series 4 sixteen inch factory alloy wheels with Goodyear tyres
  • Leather-bound blue Wilton carpets
  • Lambswool overmats
  • Champagne suede headlining
  • Three piece leather body-coloured luggage set
  • Specification includes Blaupunkt stereo and rear glass sunroof
  • Digital dashboard
  • Classic hand-finished wood veneers
  • Blue two-spoke leather-rimmed steering wheel
  • Two tone dashboard with blue leather top and cream knee roll
William Towns’ makeover of his original 1976 design was inspired, creating a handsome car that looked modern without sacrificing the incredible presence of the original.
It is a car that looks particularly good in the Royal Blue of this example, so it is a surprise to learn this was the only one finished in that colour. It is in superb condition typical of the high levels of care and maintenance expended by its keepers. Prior to entering the vendor’s high end collection it was a regular concours class winner.
It is also pleasingly factory standard, enabling the buyer to experience the mix of sumptuous luxury and cutting edge technology - like that remarkable digital dashboard - that characterised these expensive and rare cars.

The Mechanics

  • 5,340cc Aston Martin hand-built 280bhp fuel injected V8
  • 4spd automatic gearbox
  • Full service history mainly by Aston Martin Works
  • Recent £5,000 service by Aston Martin Works
  • Impeccable MOT history with only one minor advisory
Beneath the Lagonda’s futuristic shape were some reassuringly established mechanicals, mainly drawn from the contemporary V8 coupe. That means Tadek Marek’s superb 5.3 litre V8, in these later cars equipped with more dependable fuel injection.
This is a very low mileage car recently released from a private collection. It comes with a suitably comprehensive service history, most of it by the Works. This includes a recent full service in April 2023 with very few miles subsequently covered. It runs and drives in a manner you would expect from such a sparingly used, carefully maintained car.
