The Appeal
The Land Rover 90 and 110 were launched in 1984 as replacements to the ubiquitous Series Land Rovers and offered numerous useful enhancements and refinements over the now outdated Series vehicles. The Defender name was only introduced in 1990, however, when the arrival of the Discovery made Land Rover a multi-model marque for the first time. Notably Defender improvements included a coil sprung suspension, a more modern single piece windscreen, plastic wheel arch extensions to accommodate the wider track and a permanent four-wheel-drive system carried over from the Range Rover.
This example has previously undergone a professional conversion into a Beach Runner specification with a full-length fabric hood and a host of other valuable upgrades and enhancements. It was specified for a new tour company that never happened. As such it is immediately ready for adventure or could be further developed for camping duties if required.
The History and Paperwork
- The 110 is a factory right hand drive model but first supplied to an overseas market

The Interior
- The interior of this 110 has been refitted with style and Beach Runner specification

- The Defender is fitted with an immobiliser switch hidden on the Defender for added security
The front seats of the Defender are finished with box pleated covers in a Windsor Tan hue to the faces. The sides of the seats are finished in black, and the two shades are delineated by magnolia coloured piping. The front seats feature adjustable headrests for additional support and comfort. Between the front seats is a commodious storage cubby which is topped with a fabric covered lid which doubles as an armrest. Twin cup holders are built into the face of this.
The dashboard is standard Defender fare with a useful oddments shelf running nearly the full width of the cabin. A hooded instrument binnacle sits directly ahead of the driver. This houses the white on black instrument set and associated warning lights. The standard Land Rover twin spoke steering wheel is fitted. The front door cards are finely trimmed in immaculate stitched Windsor Tan leather. The front cabin is fully and newly carpeted in black.
The rear cabin is configured in traditional eight-seater specification. This consists of two folding two-seater benches each side. These are identically trimmed to the front cabin and in an equally fine condition throughout. New lap belts are fitted for optimum safety and convenience. The floor is finished with a hard wearing, chequer plate patterned rubber mat.
The Exterior

This 110 suits its dark green metallic livery so well. There is a high metallic flake content to the finish, and it is reported to have been professionally resprayed during its conversion to its exciting specification. That would help explain the fine-looking overall condition of this Defender.
At the front of the 110 the look has been tastefully modernised with a set of LED lights and later, chunky radiator cover. The wing tops are finished in black finished chequer plate. At the rear, updated light lenses are noted and a side hinged rear door affords access to the rear cabin. A hinged spare wheel carrier is also fitted here. A heavy-duty tow bar tubular mount is fitted here and finished in matt black.
The full-length fabric hood is finished in a dark grey shade and features twin vinyl windows on each side. The sides of the hood are designed to roll up and stow for maximum visibility and ventilation when needed. Of course, the entire hood can be easily removed when required.
A new set of 18-inch diamond cut and black Land Rover alloy wheels are fitted. The faces of the spokes exhibit a high shine, and the inner portions are finished in a complimentary gloss black. A new looking set of Grabber GT3 all terrain tyres are fitted. These are in 265/65 configuration.
The Mechanics
- The 110 is fitted with the robust 2.5 litre turbocharged diesel engine

This Land Rover is fitted with the 2.5L turbocharged Tdi engine. This is a well proven unit which underwent numerous upgrades from its earlier iterations to improve reliability and drivability. The unit is in a low stress state of tune and rated at around 85bhp with a useful 150lb-ft of torque available from a mere 1,800 rpm. Power is fed to all four wheels via a five-speed manual gearbox. A low / high ratio transfer box is fitted in order to maximise the Land Rover’s off-road capabilities and towing ability.
The engine bay appears to be in great order, looking clean and fresh with no obvious leaks, corrosion or other issues. A number of new or recent parts are evident in keeping with the Defenders reported recent service. The underside of the Land Rover has seemingly been well protected with a recent looking coating of preservative.
The current owner reports that the Land Rover runs very well and returns impressive fuel economy for this type of utility vehicle. A new battery was fitted in April 2023 and a recent full service has been undertaken. This combines with a long and advisory free MOT to suggest that the Land Rover is in a good mechanical condition and ready to enjoy.
Summary
The 110 Defender is a large and flexible vehicle which can be used confidently literally anywhere. The Defenders look equally at home on the farm or outside the most stately of stately homes. This particular example looks great with its very “of the moment” Beach Runner style conversion.
This Defender has been professionally converted to its current specification and presents very well indeed both internally and externally.
