In many respects, the Supercharged XKR had an easy passage into the realms of the Jaguar hall of fame. The groundwork was laid by the introduction of the earlier XK8, which had been hyped by the press but did actually fulfil the expected promises as a superb luxury sports car. The XKR benefits from the updated 32-valve 370bhp 4.2-litre Supercharged V8 power plant, which soon established a reputation for durability and well as its delightful soundtrack. With Jaguar's build quality steadily improving, the luxurious XKR became a formidable rival to the Italian and German brands, and offered certain refinement and decorum to the party. As a grand tourer with devastating performance, it was still unmistakably a Jaguar but one that had brought Browns Lane bang up to date.

This exceptionally well-preserved 2005 example in full XKR spec is among one of the last of the X100 series to leave the line and is finished in the most desirable of classic trim finishes. With just 52K recorded miles, full service history and the benefit of climate-controlled storage and facilities, as well as a new MOT, this has to be considered one of the nicest XKR currently on the market.

Originally sold new in Suffolk by Lookers Jaguar, it has had six owners to date, which is usual on high-end performance cars because the attraction of the XKR typically lends itself to curiosity among the wealthy.  The car was taken on by its current owner 5 years ago, thanks to its full Jaguar main agent stamps, but also its remarkably clean condition with low mileage. The XKR is part of a tasteful collection of cars that the owner bought following his retirement, and is now consolidating the fleet to free up funds. He admits, he hasn’t driven it as much as he would have liked to but loved owning it. The slowdown in miles during his ownership has not affected the mechanical worthiness of the car thanks to the regular mechanical upkeep, services, MOTS and regular checks to clear the cobwebs. The owner also believes it had been dry storage/garaged prior to his ownership.

The car comes with plenty of receipts and service history paperwork and stamps to confirm the car's provenance. It has seen regular service history from Jaguar main dealer to 2016, whether it needed it or not and subsequent servicing from Tom Lenthall, an independent Jaguar specialist. It also comes with receipts dating back to 2009, including a 2K bill in 2017 to replace the front dampers and renovate the front subframe assembly. The car received a new battery in 2018. The current registration plate may be retained by the owner, in which case the XKR will revert back to its original issue plate. However, the vendor has advised us that they would be prepared to negotiate its inclusion with the car separately, after the auction has closed, directly with the winning bidder - should they so wish. The car has just passed its MOT and will be sold with a full years ticket.

As to be expected the interior condition is reflective of the script of its pampered lifestyle, with no major deficiencies to upset the story of the car. The Recaro heated racing seats are clad in ivory cream leather, and asides from a little wear on the bolster of the driver's seat, are in excellent condition with no rips or damage noted. All other seats are in decent order. The carpets are very clean, with no obvious wear or damage to the mats. The door entry kick plates show small signs of scuffing, with the door cards and capping in well-preserved order.

The Walnut veneer dashboard and leather detailing dominates the interior and is close to faultless. There are no significant signs of wear observed, with the dials, controls and switchgear in good condition. The fascia is also free from the ageing process and the stitching has retained its quality.  Electrically, the car is said to be in good order, with no reported issues with the console functions. The 6 CD changer premium Alpine sound system, Satnav, Bluetooth and iPad connection system are all functional.

The multi-function ‘R’ embossed steering wheel is fine fettle, again, following the overall condition of the interior. There are no marks on the headlining.

Thanks to the dehumidified storage facility and customer care help create an impression that this 2005 example has to be considered one of the best late XKR coupes currently for sale. Since the car was bought by the owner it has been a long term resident of the facility and has benefited from the attentive monthly checks. Structurally the car cannot be faulted, the panel gaps and fit are as new with no evidence of damage observed. There were no dents noted on the body and no signs of corrosion evident on the external skins. All doors open and close with no issues, with the door rubbers all being in perfect condition. The engine bay, rear subframe and wheel arches are solid, with no significant issues observed with the condition of the rest of the structure. The boot area offers the same positive note. A check on the sills, floor pan and inner wings also revealed no damage. 

The paint finish has retained a decent lustre throughout. The Quartz (Gun Metal Grey) metallic paint finish is very good, but could come up to perfection with a machine polish to remove the age-related swirls. The car is free from any form of stone chips, the front panel, door edges and lower sections of the body are in excellent condition. There are a couple of minor scuffs to be noted, a light mark on the rear bumper and a little around the keyhole on the drivers door, but all could be easily resolved by a specialist to make the paint finish 99% perfect. The front edge of the bonnet displays a little matted paint finish and the front bumper has a couple of minor imperfections, but given the low nose and vulnerability of the design to stone chips, it is in remarkably good shape.

The attractive BBS Sepang 20-inch split rim performance alloys are in excellent condition, with no kerb damage. There are the odd signs of age, but nothing significant. The Pirelli's P-Zeros are in good condition with legal tread, the rear items are from 2015, with the front tyres over 10 years old. The glass is clean and unblemished with no chips, hazing or damage observed. The glass rubber is in good condition with no evidence of perishing or ageing. The Xenon lights are operational and the front plastic lenses are good, with a minor suggestion of age but no damage or major fogging to be seen. All other lenses and lights are in good condition. Additional trim, such as the emblems, bright finish front grille, wheel arch spats and window embellishment are all good, with nothing negative to report. 

Mechanically the car has been maintained by the storage facility, with regular 20-minute engine run times, fluid checks and electrical tests to ensure the car is ready to be taken on the open road upon request. The engine starts up with no hesitation, with no evidence of spluttering or malfunction. There were no unwanted noises coming from the engine, as the V8 purred nicely on tick-over. Monthly vehicle reports paperwork also come with the car, which helps to confirm its reliability. No fluid leaks were observed. No noises are said to come from the suspension or steering, worth noting that both areas having seen investigation in the past, particularly the front suspension which has been overhauled - a notable weak point for this model. The XKR quad exit exhausts are in good condition, with the cold engine condensation soon dissipating once the engine reaches temperature. The cross-drilled Brembo brake discs, and Jaguar brake calipers really set the car off, reinforcing the XKR’s sporting credentials. They are said to perform as expected, with no defects or impairment to their performance.

In full XKR spec, along with its near perfect condition, pampered storage and watertight service history under a selection of careful owners, this XKR is everything expected from a Jaguar. Combining a refined, comfortable ride with a fabulous engine soundtrack and acceleration. As one of the last of the series, it benefits from Jaguar's continuous development and improvements that JLR hosted upon their flagship model and it has to be said, now ridiculously undervalued in view of the cars styling, performance and heritage. Age may have diluted the exclusivity of the XKR, but it has matured nicely and will still turn heads. Simply said, the XKR's ability to blend the old-world comfort and grace of a Jaguar with the specification of a supercar, for what has to be regarded as a tempting price is impossible to resist.
