Introduced in 1967, the Mercury Cougar was marketed as an upscale version of the popular Ford Mustang. While it shared many components with the Mustang, the Cougar was the more luxurious pony car. First generation Mercury Cougars have made their mark in the classic muscle car scene.
This particular Mercury Cougar is a base model two door hardtop, with a 289 V8 linked to an automatic transmission. The car is titled in California, but spent most of its life in the Denver Colorado area.
Today presented in its 2nd coat of paint, the body is in solid and well-preserved condition. It will be needing some small patch work on the right rear floor board and on top of the inner front fenders. With weathered paint and a few minor dents, it will be needing a full respray.
The interior is generally in well-preserved condition and will also be needing some cosmetic attention. The top section of the dasboard is warped from the sun and needs to be replaced. Front and rear seats have been covered in red cloth seat covers, but still have the original black vinyl upholstery underneath. covers should be replaced, as should the leather on top of the rear bench. The black canvas convertible top is in good condition, but will require a new plastic rear window. Factory original AM radio and period correct Sanyo 8-track cassette player.
The Cougar has been in storage for over two decades and will be needing a thorough service check up. Mechanically, the car makes a good impression though. It runs and drives, but should not be considered roadworthy at the moment. The fuel tank has a few rust holes and needs to be replaced. We fitted a new fuel pump and ran the car on an external fuel bottle. A sales slip from 1988 indicates a water pump rebuild. 4 new tyres. The brakes are functioning, but need to be rebuilt. The automatic transmission works, but will need new seals and gaskets.
A solid survivor and straightforward project car, not to be missed by practical muscle car enthusiasts.
