After 12 popular years in its previous form, the massively re-styled and re-engineered SL500 two-seat convertible went on sale in early 2003.
The new car was powered by a 302-hp, 5. 0-liter V8 engine, fitted with the world’s first electronic variable brake control, and included a vario hard-top convertible roof that was able to unfold in just 16 seconds.
Mercedes' stylists lengthened the SL 500’s wheelbase by 1. 8 inches, widened the track by about an inch, and shortened the overhangs to give it a road-inhaling stance.
