Really, the controversy of the 996 seems pretty funny to the modern lens. The car received puzzled looks and a healthy dose of cynicism thanks to its new water-cooled powerplant and 'fried egg' headlights - and for a car like the 911, surely one of the most purist-beloved sports cars in the world, there was a slim chance it could prove too much of a gamble for the often conservative bods in Stuttgart.
Of course, it proved said purists wrong.
The new car was a sales-record-smashing success, and proved that a little tinkering didn't have to mean losing the spirit of its predecessors. It was every bit as nimble, powerful and performance-led as a 911 should be, even if it was a little more restrained and user-friendly for the uninitiated enthusiast.
This 2002 example will doubtless attract plenty of attention at auction. Highly original, and having covered a commendably low 64,261 miles from new, it has just about everything going for it, and a good stock of paperwork offers plenty of confidence for the car's lucky new keeper.
