1921 Citroen Type A 10CV

Highlights

  • Exquisitely restored and a truly fine piece of Citroen’s history
  • Unbelievably sound underside
  • Retrimmed and repainted to the highest standard with a sympathetic view toward originality and patina

The Appeal

Rolling off the line on the last day of the last month of production, this Type A was practically the very last of the 24,000 to be made before being succeeded by the Type B. This example was known as the 4-Seater Torpedo, the more family orientated model produced with practicality and touring in mind gifted with three doors, room for four or five and a fold down roof for a year-round thrill of motoring.
Although the name indicated a 10hp output, the real figure was more in the region of 18hp, making this perfectly capable of 35+ mph cruising speed and absolutely no slouch for its time.
Beautifully restored and preserved with adorable original features and a charming colour scheme, historic vehicles rarely come finer than this one and make a wonderful conversation piece at any motoring event.

The History and Paperwork

  • Current V5C shows just 2 previous keepers, the current owner having the vehicle since 2005 and the previous keeper owning the car for ten years prior
  • Used as a personal wedding car as well as appearing at various classic car events and winning awards
  • Kept in a heated garage by the present owner year round

The Interior

  • Rich leather seating, evidently recovered in recent years wear a dark brown colour, deep natural texture and a simple yet luxuriant design which is carried through to the door cards that wear the same leather, subtly embossed with the correct Citroen logo both front and rear alike
  • A large, thick rimmed steering wheel is the focal point of the cabin which is dressed is a three piece wood rim that wears some light marks and signs of use but has a deep dark gloss and even colour and is mounted on a simple three spoke design, evidently an original item that has been beautifully made and well maintained
  • Three pedal driving setup with the accelerator in the centre, transmission brake on the right, clutch to the left and hand operated rear brakes
  • A simple yet intriguing dashboard with a lovely dimpled ‘fishscale’ pattern milled into the aluminium and a nice aged colouring adorned with two dials, one containing a speedometer and odometer the other showing voltage/amps
  • The dark red carpet throughout the interior is in excellent condition with no evidence of wear and has been fitted well
  • 12V klaxon horn fitted for amusement
  • With the soft top raised, the interior is cosy, the inside of the canvas is clean and seemingly undamaged with a clear window to the rear and sturdy wooden framing that matches the steering wheel in colour

The Exterior

  • Superbly finished cream paint with dark brown fenders supports a great gloss and even finish all round
  • Perfectly straight coachwork all round and nice even panel gaps prove the quality of the care and restoration of the car
  • Bi-fold bonnet allows excellent access to the mechanicals of the engine from both sides
  • Externally mounted engine temperature gauge on top of the radiator is a classic feature of this era
  • The external condition of the canvas roof is excellent with no evident damage or significant wear, retaining a great dark black colour and tight fit along with a tonneau cover for the rear seats
  • The paint colour is carried through to the large Dunlop wheels that have simple solid centres and retin a good finish, glossy with some minor marks likely from tyre fitment and the original Dunlop branded wheel studs
  • An opening windscreen is the only window on the car, simply made but functional and can be opened and locked in position for ventilation. This is supported by an array fixings, a highly polished frame that is in beautiful order and kept clear with an manually operated laterally moving wiper held on a brass arm
  • The running boards are of a similar colour to the steering wheel and roof frame, a nice exterior feature in great condition with protective aluminium strips
  • Highly polished radiator surround and headlamps finish the front off nicely with the vintage blue Citroen emblem neatly shown off on the top of the grille, all in great condition and no evidence of damage and the engine crank handle is nicely polished with some light patina

The Mechanics

  • The underside, under arches and chassis rails are in truly excellent order, restored, treated and painted with a easily maintainable finish
  • The semi-elliptical leaf spring setup across beam axles makes for a superb ride front and rear, allowing good road holding on all surfaces and simple access for maintenance through grease nipples
  • The rear drive axle is leak free with 4 maintenance nipples and easily accessible differential oil top up
  • The braking system is simple, with two rear mounted drums, cable operated with seemingly well maintained mechanics, operated by a leaver in the interior and a foot operated transmission brake
  • Evidently new exhaust and prop-shaft are fitted
  • The underside of the side-valve engine and the three speed transmission look in good order with clean aluminium casings and evidence of maintenance
  • Under the bi-fold bonnet everything looks incredibly vintage but wonderfully maintained. The side valve engine is simple, allowing easy maintenance and access to all the mechanicals
  • The carburettor and coolant pipe are brass, highly polished and a real focal point of the engine bay, all evidently properly maintained and original
  • Dual battery 6V system as was originally fitted powers the starting and lighting
  • The engine bay is through and through totally tidy and very clean
