1927 Tatra T11

***Vendor supplied images***

Highlights

  • One of just 3,847 examples produced over the T11’s four-year run
  • Appears highly original and well-presented
  • An enticing project for recommissioning or rolling restoration

The Appeal

While most are only likely to be familiar with Tatra’s later streamlined offerings, you’ll be pleased to hear that the Czech firm’s pre-war output was no less unconventional and innovative in its design and engineering. During the early 1920s, Steyr’s talented engineer Hans Ledwinka recognised potential in a compact car and developed what would become the T11 in his own time. Steyr rejected the project, so Ledwinkaleft the company and took his design with him to Nesseldorfer, which soon became ‘Tatra’.
With a unit construction 1,057 cc flat-twin OHV engine and four-speed gearbox, and an enclosed integral propshaft which made up the main backbone of the chassis, to say the Tatra T11 was mechanically unusual would be an enormous understatement. The firm’s unorthodox approach didn’t end there either, as the styling was quite unique.
For those seeking one of these rare pre-war machines, this 1927 example is a great find. While it’s not currently in running order and would benefit from some light cosmetic restoration, it remains highly original, complete and in very sound order - perfect for recommissioning or rolling restoration.
