The Appeal
The Ford Model A represented a significant leap forward from its predecessor, the Model T, offering more power, improved handling, and a more sophisticated design that helped establish Ford's dominance in the automotive market of the late 1920s. Much as the T had gotten America onto the roads, the A was dedicated to keeping them there, and really changed almost every aspect of the American lifestyle in the process.
Quickly taken on as the 'default' American car, the Model 'A' became everything from fanciful sedans to grafting commercials and quirky railroad hunters. To call them popular would be an enormous understatement - it was practically the most essential car on the roads, and an icon of the late '20s and '30s.
They became particularly well-reputed for long distance travel, taking the developing cross-country state routes and being picked up by celebrities and ne'er-do-wells alike. Indeed, Bonnie and Clyde famously drove one.
This particular 1929 Fordor example has an interesting provenance, having been painted for use as a New York taxi in the 2016 motion picture, "Genius," which starred Nicole Kidman, Jude Law, and Colin Firth. Beyond its silver screen credentials, this Model A benefits from an engine taken from the A's successor - a more powerful but very similarly sized and weighted L-head straight-four, providing additional horsepower and torque without detracting from the car's pre-war character.
