1958 Triumph T21 3TA

Highlights

  • Two registered keepers from new
  • Original and apparently unrestored bike
  • Kept in a dry garage throughout its life
  • Interesting and complete restoration project
  • Same family ownership since 1990
  • Great example of Triumph’s pivotal T21

The Appeal

The T21 was the first of a new generation of Triumph bikes. As suited to touring as commuting, it was both stylish and comfortable.
The second keeper of this lovely 1958 example, who acquired it in 1990, used it for exactly those kind of trips. The T21 was renamed the 3TA in September 1958, which makes this bike an early one. It benefits from the revised plunger choke introduced that year.
Seemingly highly original with its attractive sky blue metallic paintwork, it even retains its ‘toast rack’ tank panel grid. It has not been run for some years so will require recommissioning. Whether the buyer chooses to retain the lightly patinated originality or restore it to its former glory, this will make a wonderful project with a stylish bike to enjoy at the end of it.

History and Paperwork

  • First registered 20th May 1958
  • Two registered keepers recorded by DVLA
  • Acquired by seller’s father in 1990 and used for commuting and classic bike tours
  • Kept in a dry garage throughout its life
  • Old typed service schedule with items crossed off
  • Original Triumph handbook and registration document
  • Vendor advises that it has not been started for eight years or more

The Condition

  • Seemingly very original 3TA with factory correct light blue metallic paintwork
  • Condition reflects the originality and lack of use with light patina visible in photos
  • Bike is sold as a restoration project and buyer should expect refurbishment
  • Underside has a thick layer of oil over the frame
  • Frame appears to be solid and shows no immediately signs of corrosion
  • The painted parts are mostly in good condition
  • Some evidence of touch up which has been applied to a poor standard
  • Surface corrosion on bathtub under seat and a few other minor imperfections
  • Rubbers are old and damaged
  • Seat appears worn with a small rip
  • Paintwork shows signs of brushstrokes in a few places, indicating touch-ups
  • Some surface corrosion in a few places as shown in the photosThe Mechanics
  • Retains its ‘toast rack’ tank grille fitted from 1957

The Mechanics

  • Reliable and well regarded 350cc engine
  • Manual transmission
  • Believed to be matching numbers
  • Has not been started for a while, likely eight years or more
  • The fuel tank contains old petrol
  • Reported to have been fully functional before being stored
  • Dry stored whilst not in use
  • Regularly used for commuting and touring by vendor’s father prior to storage
