The Appeal

Jaguar’s original XK was honed for success blasting down the Mulsanne Straight at Le Mans, but many found their natural homes effortlessly despatching trans-continental journeys along Europe’s new high speed road networks.
Those qualities make XKs, particularly later and more luxurious XK150s, especially popular for classic car tours and rallies. Spacious, comfortable and practical with big boots, these cars also have access to an array of upgrades like power steering and improved brakes to make the business of driving and enjoying them considerably more relaxing.
This lovely Sherwood Green XK150 seems tailor made for just such trips it is in superb condition and benefits from a long MOT.

History and Paperwork

  • First UK registered 19th May 1959 with Henlys of Manchester
  • Independent records show it was built on 23rd April 1959 finished in Sherwood Green over Suede Green
  • The car’s ‘S’ chassis prefix indicates it left the factory with the special equipment features such as wire wheels
  • One of 1,368 RHD FHC cars built according to chassis records
  • Just four owners from
  • Factory manual in good condition
  • We are told it was upgraded early in its life to 3.8litre ‘SE’ factory specification
Other specification upgrades advised by seller:
  • Fitted with Mk2 power steering kit period correct hydraulic added at great expense
  • Kenlowe fan
  • Catch tank
  • Bucket seats
  • CooperCraft disc brakes
  • Electronic ignition and electric fuel pump

The Condition

  • Fetching factory original Sherwood Green paintwork with Suede Green interior
  • Bodywork, paintwork and interior in well kept, lightly used condition
  • Paintwork presents well with only very minor marks and chips visible in photographs
  • Painted body-colour wire wheels in good order showing only light chips
  • Quality Blockley vintage tyres fitted with good tread all round
  • Underside in very good order with undersealing and no MOT structural advisories
  • Interior neatly complements exterior with eye-catching burr walnut veneers
  • Cabin fittings in very good order with only light wear to driver’s bolster to note
  • Standard interior with speakers let into rear shelf and front seat inertia reel belts fitted
  • Boot area in good order with some wear to vinyl floor mat and fire extinguisher present
The FHC got all the luxury Jaguar could muster, which in the 1950s was considerable as the sumptuous walnut and leather lined interior of this XK150 demonstrates.
This car looks particularly smart in its ‘green on green’ colour scheme, which is factory correct and enhanced by painted wire wheels. From the chromework to the panel fit and paint quality this is a very well presented car, with only very light signs of use. Those minor marks arguably make it even more suitable for proper use on tour or rally events – this is a very good example but it is not concours, so it can be used and enjoyed. Likely the power steering and CooperCraft brakes will also come in useful on those trips.

The Mechanics

  • Upgraded to ‘SE’ 3.8litre specification early in its life
  • Maintains it's original matching numbers cylinder head
  • Twin SU carburettors
  • Four speed ‘Moss’ gearbox with overdrive
  • Various useful enhancements listed above
The standard XK150 was an exceptional car ‘out of the box’ but Jaguar also offered buyers a range of factory fitted upgrades to make it even better. Specialists have subsequently leaned into this by offering a range of further improvements to appeal to the many buyers who use these cars for rallies, tours and road trips.
Chassis records indicate this car left the factory as a ‘Special Equipment’ 3.4litre model – rather than a T prefix ‘Special Equipment 3.8 – which means it would have had features like wire wheels. It was also factory fitted with the DeNormanville overdrive unit.
We are told that it was upgraded early in its life to the desirable ‘SE’ specification including fitting a 3.8litre version of the torquey XK motor. Further to that it has been enhanced with several features that suggest a life as a star of classic car driving events beckons.  These includes power steering, CooperCraft disc brakes, electronic ignition, electric fuel pump and a Kenlow fan.
