The Appeal

The second-series Land Rover is often regarded as the best-built and most versatile of the illustrious off-roader's lineage. Not only was it the best selling, it was the most enduring - it's still not too surprising to see one tootling its way through a rural town centre with a trailer stowed behind it! 

It's also amongst the most handsomely styled, being the first to receive attention from Rover's styling department with David Bache's distinctive 'barrel side' waistline. This 1959 example is particularly special, being one of the earliest Series II models produced (chassis number 83).
This 109" Safari Station Wagon has benefited from a meticulous restoration completed in 2021/22, with careful attention paid to maintaining originality while incorporating subtle upgrades for improved usability. Having been in the same ownership since 1994, it's a car with heaps of provenance!

History and Paperwork

  • First registered in May 1959
  • Purchased by the current owner in May 1994
  • Rebuilt onto a galvanised chassis shortly after purchase in the mid-1990s
  • Underwent comprehensive restoration in 2021/22
  • Accompanied by a large folder of documents including V5C in the owner's name
  • Includes invoices for work completed, older MOT certificates dating back to 2000
  • Original 1960s workshop manual (Series 2A), owner's manual and service guides included
  • 1970s Army work ticket/documents holder comes with the vehicle
  • Includes a copy of "Land Rover the Formative Years 1947–1967" by John Smith
  • Registered as a historic vehicle 
  • Invoices totalling more than £33,000 for the restoration work are present in the documentation

The Condition

  • Finished in period deep Bronze Green with cream roof panel
  • Body completely stripped and rebuilt during 2021/22 restoration
  • New Series II bulkhead fitted
  • New B and C posts, sills, rear side doors, front/right door and rear tub floor
  • Wider Series III wheels and tyres for improved handling
  • Five new tyres fitted in September 2021
  • Comprehensive rust-proofing with undercoating and wax injection to inaccessible components
  • Complete new interior from specialists Exmoor Trim
  • "Elephant Hide" interior trim, replicating the original factory specification

The Mechanics

  • 2.25-litre 4-cylinder petrol engine producing 72 bhp
  • Manual transmission with 4 gears
  • Engine and overdrive gearbox previously rebuilt by a highly regarded Land Rover specialist
  • Braking system stripped and refurbished during restoration
  • Heater matrix rebuilt by original suppliers Clayton
  • Recently fitted parts include:
    • Gearbox overdrive
    • Free-wheel front hubs
    • Ignition isolator switch
    • Hi-torque starter motor
    • Series III wiper motor upgrade
    • Brake servo 
    • Modern lighting upgrades
  • All mounting/support brackets and fastenings are new or refurbished, many in stainless steel, and all rubber seals have been replaced
