1962 MG A

Highlights

  • Hugely extensive restoration
  • Superb condition
  • Many new parts fitted
  • US import with RHD conversion

The Appeal

This MG was imported from the US back in 2000 as a LHD car. It was registered in Scotland and changed to RHD in July of 2000 before being passed to its next UK owner who was a gentleman from Woodbridge. The DVLA and MGCC records show the car has its correct, original matching VIN, chassis and engine number.
After being with the Woodbridge based gentleman for a long period of time, being little used and refined to a garage, it was sold to a friend in Woodbridge who intended to do a complete restoration. I’ll health unfortunately stalled the restoration part way through, and the car sat as a box of bits for a while before the current owner scooped it up in 2016.
Being a nuclear engineer by trade it was safe to say the MG was in the best of hands and the restoration was completed in spare time to become what you see before you.

The History and Paperwork

There is a huge folder of paperwork that comes with the MG, all invoices from the restoration are present with in depth notes on what has been fitted.
Paperwork and invoices have all been neatly organised and accurately portray the car’s restoration. There doesn't seem to be much paperwork from the car’s time in the US but considering the extensive restoration in the past 7 years, it presents as a reborn classic ready to start its life in earnest with the new owner.
The MG comes with a Heritage certificate, laminated for protection as well as a V5C and a set of keys.

The Interior

The upholstery is the original leather, cleaned and treated and the new Securon period seat belts with CE approved fittings were installed for an extra bit of safety. For refinement heavy duty rubber backed felting underlay has been fitted, with the door skins and boot getting sound deadening pads
Adding to the sound deadening pads in the door, there are new door cards and cockpit panels and the wooden flooring has been removed, refurbished and fitted with new stainless-steel screws.
The wooden veneer dashboard is in good condition too, with only some very minor cracking showing. The Moto Lita steering wheel sits proudly in front of the driver’s dials and presents in very good condition and the dials and gauges are reported to be in working order.
The hood is new as is the frame and the side windows have been refurbished, spare aluminium ones sit in a padded bag in the boot. A fitted tonneau cover included with the car is new and matches the colour of the upholstery.

The Exterior

Body panels around the car are all in good condition and had been freshly waxed on the day of the photoshoot, they’re all straight and uniform and body panel gaps are tight. Included with the car are some extra photos of the restoration.
RG Classics carried out the bodywork, fettling all the panel gaps before spraying the car in Old English White and reassembling with all new stainless-steel wing bolts, wing seals, and new chrome bumpers.
The inner wings splash guard plates are new as well and the wings have had seals and anti-stone chip paint applied at a cost of £13,842 all in. Freshly refurbished, the windscreen has new glass and seals and the front grille, the Lucas 7” tripod halogen headlamps, side lights, rear lights and number plate lights are all new too.
The boot rack finishes off the look of the car nicely and of course is a new stainless-steel item. Wheels are refurbished old stock 48 spoke wire items with new spinners shod in new Toyo tyres.
The MG has really been gone over with a fine-tooth comb and we encourage you to take gander through the excellent photos in the gallery below to see for yourself.

The Mechanics

The engine in the MG has been rebuilt by Peter Edney MG XPAG Engineering to standard specification including an unleaded head and electronic distributor with high energy coil. It’s been mated to a 5 Speed Type 9 Ford Gearbox with new upgraded clutch new prop shaft at a cost of £6,456.
Twin SU carbs feed the air and fuel and have been rebuilt and set up with new larger K & N filters and stub stacks. All petrol hoses feeding the powerplant are newly fitted with steel braided hoses and inlet filters.
Cooling is taken care of too, with a new radiator, thermostat housing, thermostat and cooling hoses, but being an ex US car, the MG did not have a heater installed. The current owner has sourced a refurbished unit with all the piping and brand new controls and switches however, which will come with the car. The owner reports that the cabin does not get cold, even in winter so as a result it has not been fitted.
Suspension wise, front units have been rebuilt, after being shot blasted and powder coated with new bushes, trunnions and seals. The hydraulic dampers have been recharged and set up front and rear with the rear has received similar treatment to the fronts, springs removed, cleaned, checked, and new bushes fitted.
The braking and clutch system has had attention too with new slave and master cylinders and copper piping fitted. Front left brake calliper is new, front right is a rebuilt unit with both receiving stainless-steel flexi hoses and the hydraulic oil system has been flushed through. The car has new pads all round and the rear callipers have been replaced for new items.
At the rear, the axle bearings have been replaced with new axle oil seals and the handbrake has been overhauled and set up for the car. The rear axle diff has been refurbished with new correct oil.
Steering is obviously an important part of driving, and the MG has had new rack bushes and universal joints refurbished. The electrical power comes from a new 12v battery with a cut-off switch mounted behind the driver’s seat on prop shaft tunnel.
To keep the battery in good health whilst sat in the garage over the winter perhaps, the owner has fitted a battery conditioner lead. Graciously, the owner has thrown in the condition with the car. To finish off the electrical starting system, a new started motor and 12v dynamo has been fitted which ensures the MG starts and continues going. All new lighting cable connections ensure you can carry on driving when the sun goes down.

Summary

As the owner reports, ‘you can’t go far wrong with an MGA for classic stylish motoring’ and he’s not wrong, this example has had a huge amount of work carried out on it and they report it to be an absolute dream to drive. This is an extensive restoration and one that has not been done with frugality in mind, the finances have been spent where needed and the level of finish the car presents in is impressive.
