The Background

The Ford Mustang needs no introduction, it’s been Ford’s poster car for the American markets since its debut in 1965, currently in its sixth generation it’s the fifth best-selling car in the Ford stable. Originally planned to sell just 100,000 vehicles yearly, the success of the Mustang clearly took Ford by surprise, with the millionth vehicle being sold within two years of its launch. 

The astronomical success of the car led it to create a plethora of cars modelled in the same way from other manufacturers trying to steal the Ponycar’s thunder, models such as the Camaro, Firebird, Javlin and the Challenger all came as a result of the Mustang. 
Now being used as a platform for Ford to venture into the modern world of electric vehicles, the Mustang name lives on and has become synonymous for being a byword for everything the American muscle car stands for. 

The History

The Mustang you see here was purchased by the current owner in 2001 with some modifications such as lowered suspension, wider tyres, racing gearbox etc. Throughout the early 2000’s, the car was given a ‘standardised’ restoration with many of the modifications being returned to stock specifications to bring it back to its factory spec 1965 Ford Mustang Coupe beginnings. 

Now with standard suspension, stock wheels and the standard auto box, the Mustang was perfect for what the owner wanted it for, a car that was lusted after during the owner’s youth and something to be proud of. As with many of these types of vehicles, the Mustang was laid up for long periods in-between drives and the current owner now feels its right to pass the car on to someone who will use it more often.  

The paperwork

There is quite an extensive history with the Mustang, lots of MOT certificates and all the paperwork required for the importing process. The car comes with all its original owners’ manuals as well as a V5 and many servicing invoices and receipts. The Mustang also has a handwritten logbook covering the period between 31st March 1966, to 21st October 1971, where everything that was spent on the car was recorded even down to the fuel. The history file documents the restoration of the car as well as the full respray the vehicle had in 2002. 
To add a bit of intrigue to this Ford, it comes with a newspaper from Ferguson Formula News stating that this car was used in America as a tester car for them to judge the benefits of a four-wheel drive system. It was pitted against an identical Ford Mustang (the other car in the test was fitted with the four-wheel drive system) in a series of tests to see how much better the four-wheel drive system held up in a number of different situations. 
The MOT runs out for the car on 12/04/2023, a brief summary of the invoices is given below.

The Interior

The trim colour is Palomino and its beautifully contrasts the burgundy exterior of the vehicle, there are red floor mats too to keep the colour theme going. 

The condition of the interior is very good indeed, there is very little wear and tear to the fabric and plastics used in the cabin, and everything apart from the radio is working as it should. The big deep dish ‘bus’ style steering wheel is in great condition and makes a fine highlight to the overall feel of classic Americana. There is one obvious anomaly in the interior in the form of the driver’s seat being a different colour. 

The story behind this goes that the one in the car was in a bad way and whilst the car was at The Mustang Shop, the owner selflessly gave the owner this seat he had lying around, it was the same style but in a different colour trim. It would require a new cover which any local automotive trimmer could easily complete. In summary then, the interior is a great place to be and could easily be one of the many highlights of this car, it also would take minimal effort to get it back up to excellent standards. 

The Exterior

The exterior of the body is actually in good straight condition, there are a few marks and little dings around the panels, but the car is rust free and the paint is actually deep and full of lustre. After a professional cut and polish, we’re confident the majority of the scuffs could be eradicated, leaving a shining ruby left to bask in the fleeting British sun. 
The wheels are in good condition too, they’re just starting to see some superficial surface corrosion creeping in on the edges of the rims which again could be easily sorted with a minor refurb. The tyres however have plenty of tread left in them with the classic thin white stripe, once again playing up to the classic vision of the Mustangs of old and remaining true to era. 
The chrome work around the car is in great condition with no pitting or corrosion. The chrome really gives the burgundy colour some great depth, whilst accentuating the Mustang’s classic lines. The Mustang was getting some loving looks from passer’s by on the photoshoot and it’s not hard to see why, this is a head turning car and the work that has gone into it has certainly helped keep this car alive and kicking. 

The Mechanics

The engine is a 4 litre, 289 cubic inch V8, which is actually quite civil sounding when the car fired into life. The burble as the car drove down the road was enough to get people to notice, but not loud enough to get you an ASBO notice through the door from disgruntled neighbours. Coupled to the auto box, this would have been the epitome of a cruiser back in its day, sit back and relax when you’re in traffic but ready to go when the mood strikes you.
On the face of it, the engine bay is in very good condition and indeed it has had a respray along with the rest of the car back in the early 2000s. All the components look to be in good condition with the new radiator and cooling system taking pride of place, shining away in all its aluminium goodness. Wiring and hosing look to be in good condition too, with no splitting, cracking or bare wires to be seen, everything looks to be in order under the bonnet (or hood) and this is evidenced by just how well the car started, idled and drove during our photoshoot of the car. 

The Appeal

This is a great car that could be the perfect base for the new owner to leave their mark on. All the heavy and arduous work has been completed on this car and all it needs now is some time, love and investment to get it that last percent on its way to being a 100% usable fun classic. On our photoshoot, we were smitten by this honest and genuine American icon that commanded presence on the roads from its looks and its sounds. 

Being a 57-year-old car, it also represents a monetary investment for the future, one that you could enjoy all year round if you felt inclined to. This could be a great car to expand your current classic Ford fleet or to dip your toe into Mustang ownership for the first time, we love it.
