Announced in September 1963 the S Type Jaguar was a technically more sophisticated development of the Mark 2, offering buyers a more luxurious alternative without the size and expense of the Mark X. A number of important improvements came with the S Type over its predecessors, including independent rear suspension, fast and more direct steering and an even more luxurious interior.

A road test of the time by Road and Track summed up the car very succinctly - "It can be a convenient family car, a businessman's express, a sports coupe, and a grand tourer. The sure-footedness of its all-independent suspension makes its responsive handling an absolute revelation. The S-Type represents a great step forward for what has always been a fine automobile." Praise indeed!

The current owner has owned this beautiful S Type for around 4 years. This iconic Jaguar had always been a dream car of him and his partner. When a beloved relative passed away and left them some money, they both agreed on what they should do with it. And, thus, “Silvia” arrived, so named after the generous relative.

In their ownership “Silvia” has been the subject of some significant expenditure, not least a specialist engine overhaul (invoice pictured). It is only now that work commitments and another Jaguar shaped project mean that it is time to find an appreciative new home for Silvia.

There is a good level of paperwork available with this car, mostly from the current period of ownership. A sample of the paperwork archive is pictured here including the V5 and the invoice for the engine overhaul.

To the uninitiated, the interior of the S-Type Jaguar can come as a revelation. No expense was spared at the time on the large expanses of leather, walnut, and chrome. A positive antidote to some of the “black hole” interiors of today’s cars.

The originality of this interior shines through. The large front seats may be deemed by some as requiring restoration, but they remain very comfortable and character filled. All other aspects of the interior present very well and go to underline the rare originality of this S-Type.

The body panels are in great shape on this S-Type and very hard to fault indeed. The current owner has had the nearside doors replaced and re-sprayed. The colour match is good but can be seen in certain direct light conditions.

In all other respects, the chrome, glass and the marvellous wire-wheels, everything presents very well and ensures that this car is a real head turner wherever it goes.

Please note – the owner does have a set of doors (pictured) that are in reasonable shape that will come with the car, or by separate negotiation depending on the price achieved.

The 3.4L XK engine is possibly the most venerable and celebrated engine in Jaguar’s long history. Produced continually between 1948 and 1992, this is essentially the same engine that appeared in the first Jaguar named car, the XK120 of 1948.

What’s more is this engine has undergone a specialist reconditioning in 2020 at a cost of over £2,000. That and other diligent maintenance expenditure by the owner has made for a very mechanically sound S-Type.

With a little over 60,000 miles covered this car remains well within the mechanical lifespan for these very robustly engineered mechanical components.

Like the current owners, there will be many enthusiasts who view the S-Type Jaguar as an absolutely quintessential sports saloon of the mid 1960’s. It is no coincidence that many police chases of the period featured an S-Type Jaguar pulling away from its pursuers!

This example provides that rare combination of an affordable and eminently practical British classic that is also a guaranteed head turner too.
