1968 Land Rover Defender 2.5TD Crewcab

Highlights

  • Previously restored
  • Updated 200TDi Engine
  • New Chassis

The Appeal

Ask anyone to name an off-road 4x4 and they are likely to say, Land Rover, the great British invention that has been the benchmark of all off-road vehicles since 1958.

This one has the benefit of having the 2.5-litre turbo diesel fitted and at some time has had a tasteful restoration that appears to have included a replacement chassis.

It comes without any substantial history but its appearance negates that as it is finished well and includes some modern touches making it a sound choice for today’s motoring.

The History and Paperwork

  • MOT exempt
  • Engine upgrade
  • Current V5c
  • Subtle Modernisation

This car has no paper trail history other than a valid V5c, but on viewing the vehicle it is quite obvious that it has been treated well and the restorative work has been extensive.

It was bought recently by a new north England car museum that intended to include it as an exhibit but has now made it available to purchase to free up extra valuable space.

It is not clear if the renovations were done professionally, but the quality of workmanship appears very good and the car does present itself extremely well.

The Interior

  • Race-style hi-back seats
  • Factory rear seat
  • Standard dash layout
  • Sports steering wheel

Inside the cabin, the sports a pair of motorsport-inspired vinyl seats that offer superior support.

The dashboard has a couple of extra 12v outlets for accessories.

The rear seat is standard and there is no headlining fitted keeping the interior feeling utilitarian and simple.

All the switches and buttons are reported to be functioning as they should.

The Exterior

  • Finished in green textured paint
  • Headlamp upgrade
  • LED rear lighting
  • Large off-road tyres
  • Safari-style fixed roof rack

The outside of this ubiquitous 4x4 is finished in rugged-looking textured paint which maintains the vehicle's go-anywhere appearance.

The headlamps have been upgraded to projector type and the rear units are now LED. It is shod in a set of cream-coloured steel wheels with large off-road tyres.

The underside has not been examined fully but the photographs taken at ground level indicate that the chassis has almost certainly been replaced although there is no supportive paperwork to clarify when that was.

Being a LWB Crewcab version there is a handy pick-up style open bed which all sorts of equipment or debris can be thrown into.

The Mechanics

  • 200 TDi Engine
  • Bilstein Suspension

Other than having the 200 TDi engine fitted, this Land Rover is just as you would expect and is as the factory intended.

Although not test driven, the engine fired first time during the photography session and 1st and reverse gears engaged with ease. Taking the photographs of the underside showed without a doubt that effort had been put into the vehicle.

Several bushes and tie rods had been replaced and the addition of a set of Bilstein shocks to the front and rear confirms the owner wanted the right things doing.

Any supporting invoices or documents would help clarify the true level of commitment to this car but as none are forthcoming, it is left to the car itself to let us know that it has had time and effort bestowed upon it.

Summary

Who doesn’t admire a Land Rover? Particularly early versions that have been nicely kept.

This one certainly does catch the eye with that green paint job and high roof rack.

There are probably a few purists out there that may cringe at the subtle modernisation of this one, but it is at least a survivor and those little upgrades allow it to mingle amongst modern traffic.

It would appear to be in good mechanical order and ready to take on the harshest of environments and places, whether that be over some boggy marsh-land or the school run, that’s up to you, but at least you’ll be doing it in one of the world’s most iconic off-roaders.
