1972 Triumph Spitfire Mk IV

***Vendor supplied images***

Highlights

  • Classic Roadster in a striking yellow livery
  • The car indicates 19,464 miles on a five-figure odometer - this is authenticated by the car's MOT history
  • Only two previous owners from new
  • Highly original interior

The Appeal

An enduring icon of the quintessentially British Roadster, it’s fair to say that the Triumph Spitfire remains one of the most iconic components of a winning formula - top-down motoring with rasping four-cylinder engines and plenty of character. Of the retro models, it could be argued that the MK IV is particularly usable. With an all-new synchromesh gearbox and improved handling, these facelifted examples were a smoother, more evolved sports car for the 70s.
This example, presented in a bright yellow livery, is a real winner for our money. Highly original, with plenty of period paperwork, it’s a beguiling machine that’s sure to turn heads on the road, and unique “time warp” car that's totally original to the period.

The History and Paperwork

  • Purchased from Dove Group and registered in 1972
  • This is backed up by a selection of photocopied period paperwork
  • Only two previous owners registered by the DVLA
  • The car comes complete with many MOT certificates up to 18/12/1992, where mileage was just 17443 miles
  • At that point, the then-owner had her laid up undercover for 26 years, until 25/01/2018
  • In 2018, the car was sold to a Triumph specialist, who recommissioned her
  • The car has been unmodified, leaving it as a real time capsule
  • The car indicates 19,464 miles on a five-figure odometer - this is authenticated by the car's MOT history
  • Serviced and repaired in June 2022, including a new electronic fuel pump
  • MOT exempt - last tested in 2020 less than 150 miles ago
  • This was passed with zero advisories
  • Paperwork file includes:
    • Original purchase, registration and inspection paperwork
    • An impressive selection of old MOT test certificates
    • Invoices from the most recent service and repairs
    • V5c document

The Interior

  • Pleasantly presented, highly original black interior
  • Unmodified, making for a very impressive 'time warp' experience
  • Black leather sets in good order, with some patina but no visible rips or tears
  • Door cards are in good order with some light marks and patina
  • Dashboard is in good order with all instruments and well-presented
  • We’ve not been informed of any faults to the interior’s instruments
  • The dashboard is completed by a stylish branded steering wheel
  • Boot is in good order with solid metalwork and the tonneau cover within

The Exterior

  • Impressive yellow paintwork makes for a very striking vehicle
  • Bodywork appears in good order with no significant dents or dings we can spot
  • Panel fit appears good with nothing out of the ordinary
  • Paintwork is in good order with only very light signs of wear
  • Chromework is bright and well-presented, as is the Triumph branding
  • The car’s glasswork and lenses look in good order with no faults we can spot
  • The black soft top appears in good condition with no rips or tears
  • The soft top’s clear panels appear to be free of cracks or holes
  • The car is sitting on its original Spitfire wheels, which look in good order
  • Car is wearing a full set of Joyroad tyres, which appear to be in very good condition
  • The arches look solid, with no tell-tale signs of orange metal or perforation

The Mechanics

  • Popping open the bonnet of this Spitfire reveals its 1296cc Standard SC I4 powerplant
  • Engine appears to be in excellent order with no faults we can spot
  • 4-speed manual transmission
  • Serviced last year, treating the car with:
    • New electronic fuel pump
    • New engine oil, filters, hoses and spark plugs
    • Replaced rocker cover gasket
    • New starter solenoid
    • New starter motor
  • We’ve no reports of any mechanical issues with the car
  • Everything appears to be in fine fettle, which should make for a highly usable retro roadster
  • Last MOT tested less than 150 miles ago, which it passed with zero advisories

Summary
With its highly-presented paintwork and original interior, this looks like a winning example of the Mk4 Spitfire, and a highly impressive time warp for a golden age of top-down British motoring. We really can’t see any reason a prospective buyer should refuse this little yellow gem.
