1974 Citroën 2CV Rally 4x4

***Vendor supplied images***

Highlights

  • Unique rally-raid creation
  • Twin-engine, four-wheel drive rally car
  • Impressive history
  • Presents in fantastic condition following a restoration

The Appeal

In 1979, engineer and rally driver Jack Hanon decided to create what is potentially one of the craziest rally cars ever conceived. Visually a 2CV on stilts, this creation combines a pair of four-cylinder boxer engines to pump out 130hp to all four wheels thanks to intricate yet reliable engineering.
Having raced for many years in Northern Africa, the car spent many years in the Americas tucked away before being discovered in 2014 as a barn find and being restored. Today, it is returned to Europe in fantastic condition, ready to be snapped up and placed within any motorsport or Citroën fan’s collection.
In brilliant condition both visually and mechanically, this car will even be perfect for any historical rally event thrown its way. A unique model in the world, this is a rare opportunity to purchase such a creative model from motorsport history.

The History and Paperwork

  • 1974 Citroën 2CV chassis
  • Created in 1979 by rally driver, Jack Hanon
  • Used for many years competing in Northern African rallies
  • Imported to Canada in 1990’s
  • Abandoned in a barn for 20 years following Hanon’s death
  • Purchased as a barn find in 2014
  • Full restoration process undertaken in New York
  • Sold in Europe by Citroën André, Holland
  • Purchased by its current owner and imported to France
  • Recent full service to both engines
  • The car has competed in many rally racing events
  • As seen in many media appearances
  • Collection of paperwork with the car
  • Previous registration documents from New Hampshire, magazine cuttings and Hanon’s engineering notes
  • Many photos of the car in action, and of the restoration
  • Several invoices from previous work

The Interior

  • Fully equipped with safety equipment
  • Very presentable condition
Built to rally raid specification, this Frankenstein’s monster of a Citroën creation features all the safety equipment one would expect. A pair of full bucket seats are sure to keep you and your co-driver in place on the more rugged stages. A full roll cage is mandatory for motorsport and foam covers will prevent too much bruising.
Aside from the odd safety-mandated addition, there is very little to speak of inside. Above the windscreen, one will spot all the gauges necessary to ensure the complex creation is in working order. The single shifter connects to both gearboxes and a minimalist steering wheel sits in front of the more tradition speedometer and odometer.
Overall, the cabin does show signs of wear and tear from previous running. However, the vendor ensures us that it is all in working order. In fact, creature comforts will be far from the main concern when tackling a Saharan rally, as this car was designed to do.

The Exterior

  • Unique looking creation ready to tackle historic rallies
  • Very nice condition bodywork
  • Currently presents in the same livery it had when new
Visually, this bimotor Citroën 2CV is quite the sight. Built upon a medley of the original 1974 2CV body and a Super Ami chassis, it has seemingly grown in proportion in every way. The car sits higher to better absorb bumps and impacts. It is wider thanks to the larger wheels and track. And it is longer to make way for the twin engine format.
Following a full restoration less than a decade ago, this classic rally racer presents in great shape externally. The body work is very straight, showing off the iconic classic French people’s car in all its glory. That is finished in a wonderful black and red ‘Coup de Coeur’ livery. Indeed, of the many colours this car has worn throughout its life, this particular design was how it first ran with Jack Hanon.

The Mechanics

  • Twin 1.3-litre flat-four Citroën GSA engines, 130 total hp
  • Twin four-speed manual transmissions
  • No known mechanical or electrical faults
Whilst this racer is clearly a notable presence visually, it is under the bodywork that it truly gets interesting. As part of its creation by engineer and racer Jack Hanon, it features two 1.3-litre flat four engines from Citroën GSA models. Both front and rear mounted power plants putting out 75hp, the car gets a 130hp kick at peak rpm.
The engines are each linked to a four-speed manual gearbox. The whole thing can either run as a front- or rear-wheel drive model only, or become full four-wheel drive. The whole thing is built upon a Citroën Super Ami chassis with 2CV bodywork place on top. Fuel comes from a pair of 100-litre tanks, allowing a range of up to 3,200km with a single engine running.
As well as the aforementioned American restoration, this car was recently fully serviced by its current owner. Full engine overhauls included timing belt replacements and service whilst new Bilstein shock absorbers were also fitted. The engine syncronisation was also optimised.
The vendor mentions that the car presents no mechanical or electrical faults at present. As a result, it is ready to once again hit the track in the many historic rally events on offer around the world.

Summary

Combining a pair of GSA engines, a Super Ami chassis and a 2CV body, this rally car is truly an amalgamation of Citroën’s 1970’s parts bin. Created by engineer Jack Hanon, it is a wonderful, iconic piece of motorsport history that deserves its place alongside other whacky creations from the past.
Following a full restoration some ten years ago, the car presents in great condition visually and is in tip-top mechanical shape. The vendor assures us that it runs well and is fit to sit among any collection of prestigious racing models.
