The Appeal
This remarkable 1976 Type 2 is definitely a case of ‘find another.’ Over 50 years since it left VW’s Hanover factory it is about as close to a brand new example as you are likely to find. Highly original in Neptune Blue with Canyon Brown vinyl interior, this bay window single cab LHD pick up has covered a mere 660km (410 miles) since new.
The story goes that it was acquired by its first Greek owner as a spare vehicle. It was subsequently never road registered and never used, instead spending its time in careful dry storage. The current keeper is a VW restoration specialist and acquired it in 2014. He also dry stored it, eventually road registering it on UK plates in 2023. MOT history from its time in the UK supports the mileage and there is a really useful Volks World Camper magazine article that fills in more details. We’ve shown in that in the photos.
The condition is genuinely impressive. We’re in proper ‘timewarp’ territory here. There are a few extremely minor signs of age to note due to the long term storage. A recent advisory-free MOT from 2023 to provides added reassurance.
Recently recommissioned by the knowledgeable specialist vendor for sale, including new fuel tank and pump, this is a fascinating, perhaps unique opportunity to acquire a collector-quality Type 2.
The vendor says:
“Amazing rare chance to buy a vehicle with delivery mileage and near new condition from 1976! Totally unrestored exterior and interior condition. Find another one with only 660 km from new!”
