The Background

The Baywindow campervan holds legendary cult status. If anyone says “oh you need a campervan” they are immediately thinking of the VW Bus. What started as a small simple commercial vehicle to accompany the VW Beetle has grown into one of the most popular vehicles of all time.
They came in many different shapes and sizes with all sorts of ingenious layouts and additional extras.
Westfalia have been coach building interiors for VW since 1950 and have a world renowned reputation for their ingenious way of fitting everything you need for a week away into what is by today's standards a fairly small van.
Due to their popularity the VW Bus still holds its money well and prices are only going one way as they become harder to find.

The History

The current owner has owned this lovely bus since May last year and completed many camping trips in that time.
Before purchasing the vehicle, he arranged for Motorline engineers in Sussex to comprehensively check the vehicle. They identified no serious areas of concern but did point out the front lights (bulbs), windscreen wipers, and handbrake needed fixing. They undertook these repairs as you can see from the invoices.
In addition, South West VW comprehensively checked the vehicle in July last year. They identified a need to tune the engine to allow it to perform on the steep hills round exmoor. They also fixed the gas hob so it is fully functioning.
South West VW repaired the horn in January and checked the van for roadworthiness after winter storage.
The van is of course tax and MOT exempt. The current owner is looking to upgrade to something a little more modern so trips across Europe can be done more easily.

The Paperwork

The camper comes with the necessary registration documents, any receipts from its current owner for any works carried out and a few of the original handbooks and paraphernalia.

The Interior

The interior is thought to be Westfalia Continental spec and is largely original. The cloth and curtains etc all seem to fit with this theory and are all in aged but fantastic condition.
There is a fully working hob with Gas bottle, a sink, and a number of smaller accessories such as the pull out table. All pictured.
The sink will require a new pump to serve the water to the bowl and there is also a gas powered fridge which is currently out of commission but is present and pictured.
The seats are in great condition as is the pop top also. There is also a spare , brand new in the packet, pop top cloth that will come with the van should a new owner want to change the current aged one though the current one is perfectly usable.
The rear bench folds out into the full width double bed in just a few seconds and will comfortably accept two adults, as will the pop top making this essentially a 4 berth sleeping arrangement.
In the front, the van is original and has an additional net shelf under the dash for added storage. The stereo is not currently working.

The Exterior

Much like the interior, the exterior is in solid functional condition and ready to set off for a nights camping as is. It is not a show van and has seen some new paint in places at some point so the colour is ever so slightly off and is visibly different.
As you can see from the pictures the van is more than presentable and the VW van community would say that given its age its earnt its patina and isn’t trying to hide anything. It is what it is.
It sits on its steel wheels and hub caps and all tyres are legal. It does have a tow bar attached and also a set of roof bars (that aren’t fitted currently) that will come with the sale.
There is one notable corrosion scab above the front windscreen, condition underneath the vehicle is often the achilles heel of these vans and this one (as pictured) is in good used condition which is probably as a result of being dry stored when not in use.

The Mechanics

The 1.6 Aircooled engine in this bus , starts well, sounds lovely and gives a great note. The gearbox is typically Type 2 and can be a little notchy into reverse but overall the van drives very well and has treated the current owner well in all his week long trips away during his ownership.

The Appeal

Van Life. The VW campervan is one of the most iconic shapes to have left the factory in Wolfsburg and they have a massive cult following of enthusiasts which means advice and parts are readily available should you need them.
Owning a van like this is a lifestyle choice, IT WILL become part of the family and that is why on the whole most of these vans have a small number of owners during their lives as people do not want to let them go.
This particular van is not a showroom model but in perfectly usable condition, prime for getting out and about to start exploring with the family in tow, looking for that next adventure.
The world is in turmoil right now and it doesn’t look like we will all be jetting off to sunnier climes anytime soon due to restrictions so now is the perfect time to explore the UK and if you were to invest in something like this, home will be wherever you park it.
