The Appeal

When Alain Prost won the 1979 Formula 3 championship – the springboard for winning his seats at McLaren and Renault – he was driving a Martini-Renault MK27. Not this precise car, of course, but the same model. That makes this quite an important machine in motorsport history.
If you’re looking for a track day weapon, or something to take historic racing or hill-climbing, this proven race car could be the ideal choice – especially as the vendor tells us it has just been comprehensively restored and is ready to go.

The History and Paperwork

The Interior

As this is a race car, the interior really only consists of an aluminium tub, some instruments, a leather-clad steering wheel, the gear shifter and pedals. A seat has not been installed, allowing the new owner to install their preferred combination of racing bucket and harness.

The Exterior

The car now features a ‘Yacco’ red and green livery over a gloss white base coat. It looks to have been very well finished, and there are no issues with the paint or damage to the bodywork that we can see.
The chassis is a tubular frame design, featuring a wide front wing and large, adjustable rear wing. Wheels are two-piece Gotti items, with red centres and polished barrels. We’re informed by the vendor that the slick racing tyres will soon need replacement.

The Mechanics

The vendor tells us that the car is running a 1,595cc four-cylinder Alpine-Gordini motor, with twin Weber carburettors. This is mated to a Hewland Engineering manual transmission, slung out at the back of the car.
We’re assured that the car runs, drives, stops and steers as it should, with no mechanical issues to report. An alternator has been fitted to make it a bit more livable.

This MK27 is the kind of legendary machine that any self-respecting enthusiast should be delighted to put in their garage.
