The Appeal
By the mid-1980s, the Volkswagen Golf GTi had already defined the “hot hatch.” The second-generation GTi, launched in 1984, built on the Mk1’s success with a more refined drive, greater practicality, and a touch more power, while retaining the nimbleness and everyday usability that made the original so beloved. Its 1.8-litre engine, sharp handling, and understated styling quickly set the benchmark of the era - and it remains one of the most evocative hot hatches today.
This particular 1984 example captures that appeal well. Finished in Silver metallic, it sports the desirable “small bumper” GTi look, with straight plastic trims and 14-inch Pirelli “P Slot” alloy wheels. The bodywork is smart overall, with light age-related marks, slight damage from storage, and typical surface rust. Inside, originality meets subtle upgrades: everything is said to work, the headliner appears tight, and the OEM golf ball gear knob is present. The original JN Black/Silver fabric rear seats and matching door cards remain, complemented by retrofitted full-leather front seats.
Largely standard under the skin, this early Mk2 GTi’s smart Silver finish, solid structure, tidy interior, and strong running condition, it’s a compelling prospect for anyone seeking a true 1980s icon.
