The G-Series 911’s were so named in line with the Porsche tradition of assigning a letter to each model year. With Model Year 1968 being assigned “A,” the G-Series was applied to cars made between 1974 and describes cars up to the 1989 Model year. 

This was basically to help differentiate them from the first generation 911’s, which are sometimes referred to as F-models.

Externally the key differentiators of the G-Series cars are the impact absorbing bumpers and the rear reflective panel with Porsche lettering. Internally the signature sports seats with integrated headrests, or “tombstone” seats, is the most obvious attribute of the G-Series cars.

The G-Series launched with a 2.7L, six-cylinder boxer engine. The displacement subsequently grew to 3L and ultimately, as in this car, to 3.2L. The G-Series cars are becoming increasingly sought-after as a pure representation of the air-cooled, light and agile 911 ethos.

This example of the breed was a UK supplied car originally and its background is authenticated in the accompanying Porsche certificate (pictured). The car spent a significant part of its life in Jersey where the mild climate and diminutive proportions of the island have no doubt contributed to the low-mileage and rust-free condition of the car.

This 911 enjoys a high specification with equipment including grey leather upholstery, electrically operated front seats and five-speed G50 gearbox. The Sports Equipment mentioned includes 16-inch Fuchs alloy wheels, front and rear spoilers and sports shock absorbers. The car even comes with an unused tool-kit and two keys.

As you will see from our photographic package the car comes with a significant archive of paperwork. The paperwork presented here is a just sample of the very comprehensive history file.

The key items presented here are the original book pack including hard to find owner’s manual, stamped service book, current V5 and numerous invoices relating to servicing and maintenance. Significant amongst these is an invoice in excess of £3,500 dating from February 2021 from renowned Porsche specialists Export 56.

This relates to a full service and numerous other key maintenance items.

The interior of this car belies its age and presents very well indeed. The signature tombstone seats are in particularly good order with no rips, tears or even any areas of wear. The original carpets remain in great shape and have been protected with an additional set of over mats.

The dashboard and switchgear are also in fine order. The door cards are excellent. A sports steering wheel has been fitted, although the original comes with the car. The luggage compartment is also very tidy and still contains the spare wheel and an original Porsche tool kit.

The Slate Grey metallic paintwork presents extremely well and has a deep lustrous shine. No blemishes were noted or reported. The current owner reports that the car appears to have been garaged over the years as a hobby car and free from rust including the all-important kidney bowls and bottom of the B posts. 

All the plastic trims and rubber seals appear to be in excellent condition with no signs of perishing and the light lenses are clear of any moisture. The power hood works as it should and was witnessed during our visit. 

A new hood was fitted in 2020 and, consequently, the condition of the canvas and rear screen are as new. A bespoke tonneau was also made when the hood was renewed. 

The underside of the car is good and free from corrosion. To preserve the underside, the owner reports it was treated this year with the respected Bilt Hamber range of rust proofing products.

The replacement Fuchs wheels are in great condition with no kerbing or marks apparent. The tyres are new and have only covered around 500 miles. The tyres are Falken Ziex ZE310s all round and are in a 205/50 configuration at the front and 225/50 at the rear.

The history file shows that this car has been maintained to a very good standard throughout its life. The car has had much money spent on it in the past 18 months, around £5,000, with everything inspected and parts replaced as required including suspension bushes and new shock absorbers front and rear.

The important valve clearances were also addressed, and the engine oil and gearbox oil were replaced this year. The engine is running very well, doesn't burn oil and pulls strongly. Being the sought-after G50 gearbox, the gear change is excellent.

The appeal of a 1980’s air-cooled Porsche 911 of this calibre is obvious on a number of levels. The Porsche 911 remains an intrinsic part of the sports car landscape even today after more than 50 years of production. 

This G-series car comes from the second generation of 911’s when the true spirit of the original concept remained largely undiluted. As such interest in these cars in on a steep upwards trajectory.

This car is very hard to fault. It has been fastidiously maintained, boasts a relatively low mileage and is in a popular and head-turning colourway. The car clearly runs well with everything working as it should.
